Australia shares extend losses on Bernanke comment, China PMI

Thu May 23, 2013 3:01am BST

(Adds details, comments, stocks on the move)

SYDNEY May 23 (Reuters) - Australian shares fell 1.5 percent in late morning trade on Thursday, after Wall Street retreated over worries that the U.S. Federal Reserve may consider winding back its economic stimulus programme, and weak data from China.

Investors were watching for HSBC's flash May manufacturing report on China, Australia's biggest export market, which May fell to 49.6, slipping under the 50-point level demarcating expansion from contraction for the first since October.

A sub-index measuring overall new orders dropped to 49.5, the lowest reading since September, suggesting China's domestic economy is not strong enough to offset soft external demand.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said the Fed could decide to scale back the pace of bond purchases at one of the "next few meetings" if the economic recovery looked set to maintain forward momentum.

The Fed's current $85 billion per month bond purchase programme has been a major force behind a rally in U.S. equities which rose about 16-17 percent this year, and also the 10 percent gain in the Australian stock market.

"Rather than having a big impact on the real economy, it(QE) is actually having more impact on highly liquid assets in the economy like the stock market," said Andrew Quin, research strategy coordinator at Patersons Securities based in Perth.

"That really indicated that there is slightly higher chance that QE will start to be wound back," he said.

The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index dropped 75.0 points to 5,090.4 by 0147 GMT. The index fell 0.3 percent on Wednesday.

The market had three attempts to break the 5,200 line in the last nine days, but all failed, Patersons' Quin noted.

"So technically the market will look a little bit weak, (and) probably due to come back a bit," he said.

The big four banks all pulled back from recent bull run on the back of strong earnings and high yields. Top lender Commonwealth Bank of Australia declined 1.8 percent, and Australia New Zealand Banking Group fell 3.3 percent.

Despite the sell-off, Michael McCarthy, chief market strategist at CMC markets in Sydney, dismissed some analysts' view that Australian banks had been overvalued.

"While they are trading at a premium compared to other global banks, the strength of their balance sheets and their reasonable profit outlook combined with important investor metrics like dividend yields, means that they're not overvalued," he said.

Top miner BHP Billiton Ltd edged up 0.4 percent, while rival Rio Tinto Ltd slipped 0.8 percent.

Gold miners were weaker after bullion prices slipped on Bernanke's comments. Australia's biggest listed gold miner Newcrest Mining Ltd slid 3.5 percent, while junior name Focus Minerals Ltd slumped 12.5 percent with volume among the highest.

New Zealand's benchmark NZX 50 index slipped 1.8 points to 4,608.4.

With high-tech guns, users could disable remotely

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) ? A high-tech startup is wading into the gun control debate with a wireless controller that would allow gun owners to know when their weapon is being moved ? and disable it remotely.

The technology, but not an actual gun, was slated to be demonstrated Tuesday at a wireless technology conference in Las Vegas and was shown to The Associated Press in advance. It comes at a time when lawmakers around the U.S. are considering contentious smart gun laws that would require new guns to include high-tech devices that limit who can fire them.

The new Yardarm Technologies LLC system would trigger an alarm on an owner's cellphone if a gun is moved, and the owner could then hit a button to activate the safety and disable the weapon. New guns would come with a microchip on the body and antennas winding around the grip. It would add about $50 to the cost of a gun, and about $12 a year for the service.

"The idea is to connect gun owners more directly with their guns, no matter what the circumstance," said Yardarm CEO Robert Stewart.

The Yardarm system is one of several recently introduced high-tech offerings: the iGun only fires if it recognizes a ring on a finger, the Intelligun uses a fingerprint locking system and TriggerSmart uses radio frequency identification.

The first smart guns were proposed more than 20 years ago, but they failed to take off for several reasons: questionable technology, added costs and concerns from some gun rights about limitations on Second Amendment rights.

Recent high-profile shootings, combined with new technologies, have revived interest. Sandy Hook Promise, a nonprofit created by Newtown, Conn., community members, is offering venture capital for new gun safety technologies, and President Barack Obama included smart guns as part of his plan to reduce gun violence.

Stewart said his company has addressed privacy concerns about its system, which would not only include live tracking but also a history of where a gun has been. Yardarm has an exclusive telephony network to avoid hackers and spotty wireless systems, and gun owners could "self-destruct" the technology on the guns themselves if they wish, he said.

National Rifle Association spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said his organization is concerned about added costs and the reliability of smart guns in general.

"We believe that the technology does not exist today where a so-called smart gun can operate with 100 percent or close to it reliability," he said, "and a firearm that does not function when it is required to is not a smart gun."

The added costs are "a luxury tax on self-defense," Arulanandam said.

At this point, there are no guns that can be wirelessly tracked or disabled, but there are systems that can locate and disable stolen cars. In 2011, one such company, OnStar LLC, came under fire for continuing to track customers' locations even after they discontinued their service. The company reversed the policy after a barrage of privacy complaints.

Last week, lawmakers in California and Massachusetts considered proposals to require gun makers to add high tech safety devices that allow only their owners to fire them. New Jersey has adopted a similar law.

Josh Sugarmann, executive director of the nonprofit Violence Policy Center, said his organization has no position on smart guns. However, he said he does oppose federal tax dollars for their research because they wouldn't impact the 310 million firearms already circulating in the U.S. today.

What You Need To Know About Special Education Tutoring ? Hot ...

Not everyone are born normal, a great number of kids are born with mental disabilities that hinders them to live normally or have the mentally that regular kids have. Indeed, these children needs more attention and support than the usual but that does not mean it takes away their right to be properly educated. With special education tutoring, these kids may have the chance to live normally again.

From the name itself, this type of program is for children that have special needs and need more attention and support. More so, this method of teaching is special as it focuses not only in teaching but approach are rather individualized depending on what the student really need. Even with disabilities, these kids still have to be educated. Such program is also intended for kids that have high IQ but have problems adapting with the environment.

Kids that are born to be autistic, with dyslexia, low I. Q or with trisomy 21 are the most common cases that needs such teaching method. If you have a child that is diagnosed with certain disabilities then you may qualify for such programs and service. With the help of a perfectly capable professionals, your child will be properly educated.

More so, through the IDEA, or Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act your school district is required to provide free appropriate public education or FAPE in the least restrictive environment. This law ensures that despite on your child?s disability, he or she will receive proper knowledge according to what their needs.

Those that are diagnosed with autism will be in one classroom and will be taught with an expert aide. This is to make sure that all will be mainstreamed. Such activity can start as early as kindergarten that is if mental disability will be detected early. Unlike regular school setting, teachers on this method will be working as a team and lessons have to be more individualized as well.

These professionals will be responsible for your kid?s improvement towards learning. However, teaching will be focused on the child?s needs. Indeed, goals will be according to what they need and what has to be improved. Parents are encouraged to participate with such program to ensure success on your kid?s condition.

These professionals will work as a team, hence they will be working collaboratively. They should teach and help their students according to their special needs. Goals should be focused on their needs as well and what needs to be improved. These programs are offered as early as kindergarten depending on how early the disability is detected and diagnosed.

Preparing these kids to live independently as possible may seem vague but with the proper education this could actually be possible. Professionals that work for such program can include teachers to therapists such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists and vision specialist. With their effort and collaborations, your child could surprisingly improve.

One of the primary goal of special education tutoring programs is to provide support to kids both with mental disability and exceptional gifts and talents through individualized education and other therapies to help them live a normal life. This will also prepare them for future employments and independent living.

Paramount and Skydance Productions' "Star Trek Into Darkness" didn't engage warp speed in its North American opening, but it nevertheless posted a solid four-day debut of $84.1 million.

Overseas, the J.J. Abrams-directed tentpole took in another $40 million over the weekend for an early global total of $164.6 million.

Heading into the weekend, many box office observers believed "Into Darkness" had a shot at hitting $100 million in North America, easily outpacing the $79.2 million of Abrams' 2009 Star Trek, which reinvigorated the sc-fi film franchise.

Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore said he is extremely pleased with the result, particularly overseas, where he says Into Darkness could ultimately double the $127 million earned by the 2009 film. And in North America, he believes word of mouth will be strong, based on the film's "A" CinemaScore and favorable reviews (the sequel has an 86 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a good score for a commercial tentpole).

"Into Darkness" returns Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto in the roles of Captain James T. Kirk and Spock. Other returning castmembers include Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Karl Urban. This time out, a scheming villain played by Benedict Cumberbatch resorts to terrorism to threaten Earth.

Lovelorn frogs bag closest crooner

May 20, 2013 ? What lures a lady frog to her lover? Good looks, the sound of his voice, the size of his pad or none of the above? After weighing up their options, female strawberry poison frogs (Oophaga pumilio) bag the closest crooner they can, finds research in BioMed Central's open access journal Frontiers of Zoology. This seemingly short-sighted strategy turns out to be the optimal mate choice strategy for these colourful frogs.

Males of the species congregate in the Costa Rican rain forest 'lek-style' to display and call together, giving females the chance to weigh up multiple males at once. But despite their best efforts, build and territory size, females tend to mate with the closest calling male, Ivonne Meuche from the University of Veterinary Medicine, Hannover, Germany, and colleagues report.

The find was confirmed by playback experiments where females, played recordings of various male calls, failed to discriminate between different call rates or frequencies, preferring instead, the nearest speaker.

Female mate choice is a tricky business. Some species chose the first mate that is 'good enough' whilst others seek out and compare many mates before returning to choose the fittest. But the simplest, least costly option is to mate with the first or nearest male encountered, regardless of quality. The strategy doesn't seem an evolutionary winner as it means that nearby, unfit frogs sometimes get to pass on their genes at the expense of more distant, genetically-superior specimens. But it does make sense in certain situations.

Non-choosy behaviour like this has been noted in fishes, and some frog species with a lek-like mating system. It's thought the strategy works for them because it reduces 'costs' in terms of search time and competition for mates. Female strawberry poison frogs may also benefit little from 'shopping around' because strong inter-male competition means the available mates are all much of a muchness.

The team also noted that females unable to find a mate within a certain time period ended up laying unfertilised eggs that never hatch. So in species, like the strawberry poison dart frog, where the choosing sex outnumbers the chosen sex, it makes sense to 'grab the nearest guy' rather than run the risk of not mating at all.

Christine White and William Shatner in "Nightmare At 20,000 Feet" in 1963.

Christine Lamson White may have had a career in Hollywood spanning over 20 years, but to many she'll always be known as "the woman on the plane next to William Shatner."

The actress starred alongside Shatner in the iconic "Twilight Zone" episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet," in which he believes he sees a gremlin tearing up the wing of the plane.

Lamson died on April 14 at Brinton Woods Nursing Home in Washington, D.C., as her death notice in the Carroll County Times reports. She was 86.

Washington, D.C. native White was born in 1926 and acted in plays while studying English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also earned a Masters degree in speech and drama from Catholic University. By the 1950s she had relocated to Hollywood and appeared in series including "Perry Mason," "The Loretta Young Show" and "Bonanza." According to the New York Times, she appeared in more than 50 television shows and movies during her acting career.

Eventually she left acting to return to Washington, D.C to help care for her aging mother, and wrote, produced and distributed quarterly bulletin called "The Rampart Papers."

Her obituary indicated that she "became acquainted with several celebrities" including James Dean; in a biography of the actor by Val Holley White admitted their relationship "did become romantic at times." She appeared in a 1976 dramatization of Dean's life, "James Dean" as a secretary; according to the IMDb it was her last acting credit.

Mystery of Moon's Magnetic Field Deepens

The moon generated a surprisingly intense magnetic field until at least 3.56 billion years ago, 160 million years longer than previously thought, a new study reports.

These findings could shed light not just on the magnetic field of the moon, which is now extremely weak, but on that of asteroids and other distant worlds, investigators added.

Earth's magnetic field is created by its internal dynamo, which itself is generated by the planet's churning molten metal core. Research increasingly suggests that the moon once had a dynamo as well, with evidence of magnetism found in lunar rocks returned by Apollo astronauts. [10 Surprising Moon Facts]

Models of the moon's core suggest its dynamo should have lasted only until about 4.1 billion years ago. However, last year, scientists revealed that the moon possessed a magnetic field for much longer than previously thought, with a powerful dynamo in its core from 4.2 billion years ago to at least 3.72 billion years ago.

Researchers have proposed two possibilities to explain why the moon's dynamo lasted so long. One possible explanation is that giant cosmic impacts set the moon lurching enough to drive its dynamo. Another explanation has to do with how the moon's core spins around a slightly different axis than its surrounding mantle layer, generating wobbles ? known as precession ? that could dramatically stir its core.

The cosmic-impact idea is supported by the fact that the moon experienced massive collisions until around 3.7 billion years ago, such as the one that created the 715-mile-wide (1,150 kilometers) Mare Imbrium, among other craters.

However, the dynamo generated by each impact would have lasted for a mere 10,000 years or so, scientists say. In contrast, if precession drove a lunar dynamo, the moon could have continuously possessed a magnetic field until as late as 1.8 billion years ago.

Now, a new analysis of the biggest lunar rock brought back to Earth by Apollo 11 astronauts in 1969 reveals the moon's dynamo lasted about 160 million years longer than previously thought, well after the last of the largest crater-forming impacts hit the moon.

Scientists investigated a 5-gram (0.18 ounces) sample taken from a 3.56-billion-year-old volcanic moon rock from the Sea of Tranquility.

"When rocks solidify from a lava, they capture a record of the magnetic field in their environment," said study lead author Cl?ment Suavet, a geoscientist at MIT. "By studying rocks of different ages, we can reconstruct the history of lunar-surface magnetic fields."

The analysis revealed the intensity of the lunar magnetic field was exceptionally strong 3.56 billion years ago, "almost identical to the field measured in a previous study of 3.7-billion-year-old rocks," Suavet told SPACE.com. "This seems to indicate that the lunar magnetic field was remarkably stable."

The ancient magnetic field of the moon was about as intense as Earth's current surface magnetic field. This makes it about 1,000 times stronger than the moon's present surface magnetic field, researchers said.

Learning more about how the moon's dynamo originated and developed could yield insights into the dynamos of smaller objects, such as asteroids, and larger bodies, such as planets.

"The moon is like a giant laboratory where we can test our theories about how planets form and evolve," Suavet said.

Many questions remain about the moon's magnetic field, such as why it was so intense late into lunar history and how it disappeared over time.

"The question is, when and how did the dynamo decay?" Suavet said.

The scientists detailed their findings online May 6 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

GPS solution provides three-minute tsunami alerts

May 17, 2013 ? Researchers have shown that, by using global positioning systems (GPS) to measure ground deformation caused by a large underwater earthquake, they can provide accurate warning of the resulting tsunami in just a few minutes after the earthquake onset. For the devastating Japan 2011 event, the team reveals that the analysis of the GPS data and issue of a detailed tsunami alert would have taken no more than three minutes.

The results are published on 17 May in Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences, an open access journal of the European Geosciences Union (EGU).

Most tsunamis, including those in offshore Sumatra, Indonesia in 2004 and Japan in 2011, occur following underwater ground motion in subduction zones, locations where a tectonic plate slips under another causing a large earthquake. To a lesser extent, the resulting uplift of the sea floor also affects coastal regions. There, researchers can measure the small ground deformation along the coast with GPS and use this to determine tsunami information.

"High-precision real-time processing and inversion of these data enable reconstruction of the earthquake source, described as slip at the subduction interface. This can be used to calculate the uplift of the sea floor, which in turn is used as initial condition for a tsunami model to predict arrival times and maximum wave heights at the coast," says lead-author Andreas Hoechner from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

In the new Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences paper, the researchers use the Japan 2011 tsunami, which hit the country's northeast coast in less than half an hour and caused significant damage, as a case study. They show that their method could have provided detailed tsunami alert as soon as three minutes after the beginning of the earthquake that generated it.

"Japan has a very dense network of GPS stations, but these were not being used for tsunami early warning as of 2011. Certainly this is going to change soon," states Hoechner.

The scientists used raw data from the Japanese GPS Earth Observation Network (GEONET) recorded a day before to a day after the 2011 earthquake. To shorten the time needed to provide a tsunami alert, they only used data from 50 GPS stations on the northeast coast of Japan, out of about 1200 GEONET stations available in the country.

At present, tsunami warning is based on seismological methods. However, within the time limit of 5 to 10 minutes, these traditional techniques tend to underestimate the earthquake magnitude of large events. Furthermore, they provide only limited information on the geometry of the tsunami source (see note). Both factors can lead to underprediction of wave heights and tsunami coastal impact. Hoechner and his team say their method does not suffer from the same problems and can provide fast, detailed and accurate tsunami alerts.

The next step is to see how the GPS solution works in practice in Japan or other areas prone to devastating tsunamis. As part of the GFZ-lead German Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System project, several GPS stations were installed in Indonesia after the 2004 earthquake and tsunami near Sumatra, and are already providing valuable information for the warning system.

"The station density is not yet high enough for an independent tsunami early warning in Indonesia, since it is a requirement for this method that the stations be placed densely close to the area of possible earthquake sources, but more stations are being added," says Hoechner.

Note

Traditional tsunami early warning methods use hypocentre (the point directly beneath the epicentre where the seismic fault begins to rupture) and magnitude only, meaning the source of the earthquake and tsunami is regarded as a point source. However, especially in the case of subduction earthquakes, it can have a large extension: in Japan in 2011 the connection between the tectonic plates broke on a length of about 400km and the Sumatra event in 2004 had a length of some 1500km. To get a good tsunami prediction, it is important to consider this extension and the spatial slip distribution.

Agriculture in China predates domesticated rice: Discovery of ancient diet shatters conventional ideas of how agriculture emerged

May 17, 2013 ? Archaeologists have made a discovery in southern subtropical China which could revolutionise thinking about how ancient humans lived in the region. They have uncovered evidence for the first time that people living in Xincun 5,000 years ago may have practised agriculture -- before the arrival of domesticated rice in the region.

Current archaeological thinking is that it was the advent of rice cultivation along the Lower Yangtze River that marked the beginning of agriculture in southern China. Poor organic preservation in the study region, as in many others, means that traditional archaeobotany techniques are not possible.

Now, thanks to a new method of analysis on ancient grinding stones, the archaeologists have uncovered evidence that agriculture could predate the advent of rice in the region.

The research was the result of a two-year collaboration between Dr Huw Barton, from the School of Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Leicester, and Dr Xiaoyan Yang, Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in Beijing.

Funded by a Royal Society UK-China NSFC International Joint Project, and other grants held by Yang in China, the research is published in PLOS ONE.

Dr Barton, Senior Lecturer in Bioarchaeology at the University of Leicester, described the find as 'hitting the jackpot': "Our discovery is totally unexpected and very exciting.

"We have used a relatively new method known as ancient starch analysis to analyse ancient human diet. This technique can tell us things about human diet in the past that no other method can.

"From a sample of grinding stones we extracted very small quantities of adhering sediment trapped in pits and cracks on the tool surface. From this material, preserved starch granules were extracted with our Chinese colleagues in the starch laboratory in Beijing. These samples were analysed in China and also here at Leicester in the Starch and Residue Laboratory, School of Archaeology and Ancient History.

"Our research shows us that there was something much more interesting going on in the subtropical south of China 5,000 years ago than we had first thought. The survival of organic material is really dependent on the particular chemical properties of the soil, so you never know what you will get until you sample. At Xincun we really hit the jackpot. Starch was well-preserved and there was plenty of it. While some of the starch granules we found were species we might expect to find on grinding and pounding stones, ie. some seeds and tuberous plants such as freshwater chestnuts, lotus root and the fern root, the addition of starch from palms was totally unexpected and very exciting."

Several types of tropical palms store prodigious quantities of starch. This starch can be literally bashed and washed out of the trunk pith, dried as flour, and of course eaten. It is non-toxic, not particularly tasty, but it is reliable and can be processed all year round. Many communities in the tropics today, particularly in Borneo and Indonesia, but also in eastern India, still rely on flour derived from palms.

Dr Barton said: "The presence of at least two, possibly three species of starch producing palms, bananas, and various roots, raises the intriguing possibility that these plants may have been planted nearby the settlement.

"Today groups that rely on palms growing in the wild are highly mobile, moving from one palm stand to another as they exhaust the clump. Sedentary groups that utilise palms for their starch today, plant suckers nearby the village, thus maintaining continuous supply. If they were planted at Xincun, this implies that 'agriculture' did not arrive here with the arrival of domesticated rice, as archaeologists currently think, but that an indigenous system of plant cultivation may have been in place by the mid Holocene.

"The adoption of domesticated rice was slow and gradual in this region; it was not a rapid transformation as in other places. Our findings may indicate why this was the case. People may have been busy with other types of cultivation, ignoring rice, which may have been in the landscape, but as a minor plant for a long time before it too became a food staple.

"Future work will focus on grinding stones from nearby sites to see if this pattern is repeated along the coast."

You are interested in hunting in Virginia, there are four common procedures of searching deer: stalking, which consists of adhering to indications and trails of deer; stand hunting, hanging around where deer are likely to journey (including tree stands); still searching; and line drives, which includes flushing deer to a line of hunters. Hunting and tracking entails adhering to deer indicators. Typical signs such as rubs, scrapes, and monitors. Scrapes are areas where dollars scrape the ground and pee below reduced draping divisions on the edge of industries. Dollars do this to mark region and draw in women deer. Deer tracks could tell you the size and age of a deer. Rubs are marks on the torsos and reasonable divisions of trees where dollars have actually massaged the velour off their horns. Another purpose for this action is that it marks area with a visual signpost.

There are also numerous elements that play a role in deer motion, however the something that could usually be relied on is the movement of deer 30 mins before dawn and 30 minutes after sundown when the deer are logging on to or leaving their serving ground. The primary factors in deer motion are precipitation, wind, searching tension, rut, and lunar motion. Deer will stay in their bed linens location during stormy weather, and when the storm quits, the deer normally begin moving. The deer will relocate to a region they feel is secure for them; they will certainly also begin moving if the hurricane passed through their feeding duration. Many deer supplying happens in areas of farming such as corn and soy beans. Because they do not such as to be captured in the open throughout a hurricane, the deer often transfer to an even more protected location of the serving area or leave the area completely till the hurricane finishes. The rut, often a month extended period in which bucks mate with does, can last much longer or a little shorter than one month. The rut creates deer to be a lot more energetic and do points that they will not normally do. The last consider deer motion is the placement of the moon. When the moon is directly overhead deer seem to be a lot more energetic.

Lots of different tools are permitted in Virginia Hunting during certain times of deer weather. These include bows, crossbows, rifles, shotguns, and muzzleloaders.

Rifles and shotguns are typically utilized for hunting deer. Most areas place limits on the minimum value or gauge to be utilized; rimfire rifles and centerfires under.22 value are commonly prohibited because of honest concerns.

In virginia hunting tags and permits are called for to hunt deer legally which helps defray the price of enforcement and preservation programs.

Squishy hydrogels may be the ticket for studying biological effects of nanoparticles

May 15, 2013 ? A class of water-loving, jelly-like materials with uses ranges ranging from the mundane, such as superabsorbent diaper liners, to the sophisticated, such as soft contact lenses, could be tapped for a new line of serious work: testing the biological effects of nanoparticles now being eyed for a large variety of uses.

New research by scientists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) demonstrates that three-dimensional scaffolds made with cells and supporting materials known as hydrogels can serve as life-like measurement platforms for evaluating how tiny engineered materials interact with cells and tissues. Their proof-of-concept study suggests that hydrogel tissue scaffolds can be a "powerful bridge" between current laboratory tests and tests that use animal models.

Today, laboratory tests of nanoparticles usually entail exposing a two-dimensional layer of cells to the material of interest. Besides being questionable substitutes for the complex cellular frameworks that make up tissues and organs inside the body, these tests can yield conflicting results, explains analytical chemist Elisabeth Mansfield, lead researcher on the new NIST study.

"Our study shows that hydrogel-based, tissue-engineering scaffolds can provide more realistic environments to study nanoparticle-influenced cell biology over extended periods," she says. Importantly, the NIST research shows that studies employing the scaffold do not require exposing cells to nanoparticles in doses that exceed normal exposure levels.

Hydrogels are networks of stringy, branching polymer molecules with ends that latch onto water molecules -- so much so that 99.9 percent of a hydrogel may consist of water. Depending on the spacing between the strands (the so-called mesh size) and other factors, hydrogels can support and promote the growth and differentiation of cell populations.

While hydrogels occur naturally -- an example is cartilage -- the NIST team chose to craft its own, giving them control over the mesh size in the scaffolds they created.

In their experiment, the team used polyethylene glycol -- a common polymer used in skin creams, toothpaste, lubricants and other products -- to create three hydrogels with different mesh sizes. One set of hydrogels was populated with rat cells containing ultrasmall semiconducting materials known as quantum dots. When exposed to light, quantum dots emit strong fluorescent signals that enabled the researchers to track the fate of treated cells in the synthetic scaffolds.

Results were compared with those for similarly treated cells grown in a single layer on a substrate, akin to standard laboratory toxicology tests.

The NIST researchers found that cells diffused through the hydrogel scaffold, forming a persisting tissue-like structure. Quantum dots attached to cell membranes and, over time, were absorbed into the cells.

Three-dimensional scaffolds often are used to test cells for multi-week experiments, and NIST researchers found quantum dots can be detected for four or more days inside the scaffold.

As significant, cells that populated the hydrogel scaffolds were exposed to lower levels of quantum dots, yielding a more representative scenario for evaluating biological effects.

The NIST team concludes that, compared with conventional cell cultures, hydrogel scaffolds provide a more realistic, longer-lived biological environment for studying how engineering nanoparticles interact with cells. In addition, the scaffolds will accommodate studies of how these interactions evolve over time and of how the physical features of nanoparticles may change.

Ticks Are a Health Threat: We Can Protect Dogs Better Than People ...

Ticks Are a Health Threat: We Can Protect Dogs Better Than People

Where there are ticks, there's bound to be tick disease. According to veterinary parasitologist Dr. Michael Dryden, the tick population in America has exploded in recent years. Curiously, dogs enjoy more benefits than people when it comes to identifying tick disease, as well as protection to prevent disease transmission in the first place. For people, there's no accurate test to determine tick-borne disease. For dogs, however, an inexpensive blood test can identify three tick diseases (Lyme, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis), plus heartworm disease.

"Tick disease is sometimes there without a pet showing clinical signs," says Dryden. "It's important to know if a dog's been exposed. Very often, the general signs (of tick disease) can show up later, and they're often mistaken for other conditions."

For example, one symptom of Lyme disease may be lameness. It's not unusual for dogs, especially older individuals, to simply be given pain relief for what's assumed to be arthritis.

For people, there are steps to avoid ticks, but in dogs there are many choices for tick protection. "Protection is key," says Dryden, University Distinguished Professor of Veterinary Parasitology in the Department of Diagnostic Medicine and Pathobiology at Kansas State University, Manhattan. Unfortunately, not all products work well.

"Sometimes consumers make impulsive purchases which may not be the most informed choices," says Dryden. "Not all over-the-counter products are truly all that protective. It's important that the product you choose is appropriate for the lifestyle of your pets, as well as where you live. By choosing the wrong product, not only may people waste money, but the pet may then be at increased risk for potential tick disease, which can debilitate the pet and cost money to treat. This is why veterinary advice on what product to purchase is so important."

Lyme disease is a particular risk for people. Using death records collected from 45 states, researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that between 1999 and 2003, there were 114 records listing Lyme disease as a cause of death. Lyme may also trigger a lifetime of chronic, debilitating illness, and weaken the immune system, allowing other diseases to take hold. ?So, while the official cause of death may not be listed as Lyme disease - truly it was Lyme that allows for perhaps thousands of untimely deaths to occur annually in people in the U.S.

In dogs, Lyme rarely causes death, but like all tick-borne diseases it's likely under-diagnosed, and may cause a lifetime of chronic problems.

Making matters worse for both people and dogs, ticks sometimes inflict a cocktail of nasty pathogens, including Lyme disease, all at once.

At least for Lyme disease, dogs have still another layer of protection not yet unavailable for humans. "The Lyme vaccines for dogs are both safe and effective, and should strongly be considered if you live where Lyme disease occurs," Dryden advises.

Is there truly more tick-related disease today than, say, a decade ago, or have veterinarians simply become better at discovery and diagnosis? "Now, there's a good question," says Dryden. "There's no doubt that the new testing for tick disease is helpful. But ticks are flourishing."

So, why are there so many? "Look at this year's weather," says Dryden. "Throughout most of the nation, it was wet. Much of the country experienced record rain. Now, it's warming up, and all after a relatively mild winter. We'll see ticks from about now to well into the fall and even into early winter."

Weather isn't the only factor. Wildlife numbers are rising. Animals like deer and fox carry ticks from more wooded places right into our backyards, even in many urban areas.

Learn more about tick protection here.

Angelina Jolie has double mastectomy to elude cancer

By Paul Casciato

LONDON (Reuters) - Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has had a double mastectomy to reduce her chances of getting breast cancer and says she hopes her story will inspire other women fighting the life-threatening disease.

Jolie wrote in the New York Times on Tuesday the operation had made it easier for her to reassure her six children that she will not die young from cancer, like her own mother did at 56.

"We often speak of 'Mommy's mommy', and I find myself trying to explain the illness that took her away from us. They have asked if the same could happen to me," wrote Jolie, 37.

"I have always told them not to worry, but the truth is I carry a 'faulty' gene."

The Oscar-winning actress said her doctors had estimated she had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer.

"Once I knew this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much as I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy," she said.

Partner and fellow Hollywood star Brad Pitt was by Jolie's side through three months of treatment that ended late in April, she said. The two became engaged last year.

"Having witnessed this decision firsthand, I find Angie's choice, as well as so many others like her, absolutely heroic," Pitt told London's Evening Standard newspaper.

"All I want is for her to have a long and healthy life, with myself and our children. This is a happy day for our family."

OPENNESS PRAISED

Jolie said that even though she had kept silent about her treatment while it was going on, she hoped her story would now help other women.

"I choose not to keep my story private because there are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer. It is my hope that they, too, will be able to get gene tested."

Breast cancer alone kills about 458,000 people each year, according to the World Health Organization. It is estimated that one in 300 to one in 500 women carry a BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 gene mutation, as Jolie does.

CNN anchor Zoraida Sambolin announced on Tuesday that she had breast cancer and was also getting a double mastectomy.

Sambolin, who anchors CNN's "Early Start" morning show, discussed her condition on the show while talking about Jolie's procedure.

"I struggled for weeks trying to figure out how to tell you that I had been diagnosed with breast cancer and was leaving to have surgery," Sambolin, 47, said on Facebook. "Then ... Angelina Jolie shares her story of a double mastectomy and gives me strength and an opening."

Jolie's decision was also welcomed by breast cancer patients and charities.

Richard Francis, head of research at the Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity in Britain, said it demonstrated the importance of educating women with the gene fault.

"For women like Angelina it's important that they are made fully aware of all the options that are available, including risk-reducing surgery and extra breast screening," Francis told Reuters.

Breast Cancer Campaign Chief Executive Delyth Morgan said Jolie's openness in talking about her experience and her decision to have surgery would raise awareness of the disease and its risk.

Jolie won a 1999 best supporting actress Oscar for "Girl, Interrupted".

She lends her star power to a range of humanitarian campaigns, including serving more than 10 years as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

In April, she urged governments to step up efforts to bring wartime sex offenders to justice.

10 Ways a Creative Writing Course Can Benefit ... - Career Tipster

Are you thinking of singing up for a creative writing course but hesitating because you aren?t sure whether it is a good career move? There are some distinct benefits to signing up for one of these courses, and not just in improved written skills. Check out this list of 10 ways a creative writing course can benefit your career.

1. It will improve your vocabulary. The language used in literature is not the same as what is commonly used in business or personal writing, which means you get to explore some new ways to express yourself. The way you speak and write does convey something about your background and your social standing, and you will want to present yourself in the best possible way when you are at work.

2. The course gives you permission to develop your creative thinking and problem-solving abilities by analyzing different writing styles and working on your own projects. This skill translates well into many career situations.

3. Part of writing involves going having your work reviewed by others. As much as no one likes having his or her ?baby? taken apart, the ability to listen carefully and implement constructive criticism is an important skill.

4. You will also have the opportunity to consider your fell writers? work as part of a creative writing program. This helps you develop your ability to evaluate your colleague?s written work and provide constructive criticism for them.

5. A creative writing course will challenge you to learn to organize your ideas and write clearly. Whether you are working on a short story, novel, play, screenplay or a children?s story, you need to make sure that the ?bone? of your plot make sense and that they flow in an organized manner. This type of logical thinking translates very well into the workplace.

6. Taking the course helps improve persuasive ability. This skill is usually associated with people who work in sales, but it can benefit workers in other fields. The ability to persuade or motivate comes in very handy for those in the advertising, teaching, coaching, or communications fields. Any type of work that involves getting a message across from one person or organization to another where some type of action needs to be taken would fit into this category. Web designers would also fit into this broad career field.

7. Coming together to share and debate ideas with your classmates can only help you be a more rounded person. Any time you get the opportunity to spend time with a diverse group of people, you will come away from the experience much richer for it.

8. Seeing your words on paper translates into increased self-confidence. If you feel better about yourself, you will be willing to take on a more challenging role in your work. Writing is hard work, but if you can step up and put your thoughts out there for people to read and comment on, the challenges of your workplace don?t seem nearly as intimidating.

9. Taking the class can help you discover a new passion for writing (or rediscover an old one). You could start by taking one course and realize that your calling is to become a journalist, an educator or a lawyer. People working in all of these careers can benefit from studying creative writing at the post-secondary level. If you have ever put pen to paper and shared your thoughts in this way, it may be worth exploring your career options by taking a course to see whether your passion can translate into a way to earn a living.

10. You can meet new people who share the same interests. Since most of the job market is hidden, don?t discount the value of making contacts outside of the workplace. The person sitting near you in class or your instructor could end up being a key contact in helping you get your next job.

Are you convinced that taking a creative writing course will benefit you? These 10 tips make a good argument for signing up for a program. The skills you gain from writing, analyzing other writers? work and interacting with your fellow students can be invaluable in helping you advance in your career.

After bombings,Turkey says world must act against Syria

By Jonathon Burch

REYHANLI, Turkey (Reuters) - Turkey accused a group with links to Syrian intelligence of carrying out car bombings that killed 46 people in a Turkish border town, and said on Sunday it was time for the world to act against the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

The two car bombs, which ripped through crowded shopping streets in Reyhanli on Saturday, increased fears that Syria's civil war is dragging in neighboring states, despite renewed diplomatic moves to end it.

Damascus denied involvement, but Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said those behind the attacks were from an "old Marxist terrorist organization" with ties to Assad's administration.

"It is time for the international community to act together against this regime," he told a news conference during a visit to Berlin.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said in a speech broadcast later on Turkish television: "We will not lose our calm heads, we will not depart common sense, and we will not fall into the trap they're trying to push us into."

But he added: "Whoever targets Turkey will sooner or later pay the price."

NATO-member Turkey has fired back at Syrian government forces when mortars have landed on its soil, but despite its strong words has appeared reluctant to bring its considerable military might to bear in the conflict.

It is struggling to cope with more than 300,000 refugees but is not alone in fearing the impact of Syria's war, which is stirring the Middle East's cauldron of sectarian, religious and nationalist struggles.

"We, like Jordan, are hosting hundreds of thousands of Syrians. Security risks to neighboring countries are rising," Davutoglu said.

DIPLOMATIC EFFORTS

The bombings took place as prospects appeared to improve for diplomacy to try to end the war, after Moscow and Washington announced a joint effort to bring government and rebels to an international conference.

Officials from Syria's opposition coalition, in crisis since its president resigned in March, said it would meet in Istanbul on May 23 to decide whether to participate.

A Syrian opposition group said the toll from two years of civil war had risen to at least 82,000 dead and 12,500 missing.

Syrian Information Minister Omran Zubi, speaking on state TV, held Turkey responsible for the bloodshed in Syria by aiding al Qaeda-led rebels. He said Damascus had no hand in Saturday's bombings.

"Syria did not and will never do such a act because our values do not allow this. It is not anyone's right to hurl unfounded accusations," he said.

Authorities have arrested nine people, all Turkish citizens and including the alleged mastermind of the attacks, Turkey's deputy prime minister Besir Atalay told reporters.

Interior Minister Muammer Guler said the bombings - the deadliest incident on Turkish soil since Syria's war began - were carried out by a group with direct links to Syria's Mukhabarat intelligence agency.

The blasts scattered concrete blocks and smashed cars as far as three streets away.

LOCAL ANGER

There was a heavy police and military presence on Sunday in Reyhanli, where security forces cordoned off both blast sites while bulldozers shifted the rubble and shattered glass.

Men stood loitering around the town, looking on and discussing, often heatedly, the previous day's events.

There was palpable anger against the tens of thousands of Syrian refugees in the town, which has become a logistics base for the rebels fighting Assad just over the border.

As the conflict has dragged on, local people have grown increasingly resentful over stretched economic resources and the violence being brought to their door.

Some smashed Syrian car windows, and others railed against Turkey's foreign policy.

"We don't want the Syrians here any more. They can't stay here. Whether we even wanted them or not, they can't stay after this," said a teacher in Reyhanli, who gave his name as Mustafa.

He said the prime minister's Syria policy was to blame.

"It's Tayyip Erdogan's politics that have done this. Turkey should never have got involved in this mess. We have a 900-km (550-mile) border with Syria. They come and go in wherever they like. Everyone here is in fear."

Syrian families stayed inside their homes on Sunday, too afraid to come out.

SUNNI-SHI'ITE TENSIONS

Davutoglu said the Reyhanli bombers were believed to be from the same group that carried out an attack on the Syrian coastal town of Banias a week ago in which at least 62 people were killed.

Syria's conflict has fuelled confrontation across the region between Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims, with Shi'ite Iran supporting Assad, and Sunni powers like Saudi Arabia backing the rebels.

Israel launched air strikes a week ago, aimed at stopping Iranian missiles near Damascus from reaching Tehran's Lebanese allies Hezbollah for possible use against the Jewish state.

Days later, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said his forces would support any Syrian effort to recapture the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, raising the prospect of renewed conflict after decades of calm on that border.

In a separate development on Sunday, Syrian rebels freed four Filipino U.N. peacekeepers whom they had captured on the ceasefire line between Syria and the Golan last week.
