Coach Rex Ryan says Wednesday that Tebow would "expand his role" for the Jets, rather than the team turning to a more conventional-style quarterback such as third-stringer Greg McElroy ? which some fans and media have speculated might be the case.

A friend of mine recently said that people with divorced parents do better at marriage than those whose parents are still together. She felt people from divorced homes are willing to work harder on their marriages and less likely to become unnerved with bumps in the road. Conversely, if you've grown up in a home where your parents relationship is somewhat idyllic, you expect your relationships and marriage to go as smoothly as theirs.

After listening to her logic, I thought she had a point. Now, I don't agree that any one group works harder on their marriage than another. Yet, I acknowledge that those from divorced homes accustomed to turmoil can have highly successful marriages.

I reflected on our conversation when reading an interview with Pink in Billboard magazine. Her parents divorced when she was 9 and she wrote Family Portrait at 21. She said, "I tend to hold onto things. I'm still exorcising some of those demons. I'm in a relationship that I've been in for 10 years and it's never going to be perfect."Her words caught my attention because she's open about how influential her parent's split has been in her life. The way I interpreted her words is that because she accepts it won't be perfect, she doesn't expect it, and thus, isn't disappointed that it isn't. This translates to being steadfast when it comes to weathering marital storms.

Pink's words are relevant for my readers because those from divorced homes might be concerned about marriage. Several of my clients are "marriage averse" because their parents split and the high divorce rates. They're terrified of having a failed marriage. Because they didn't come from a healthy home environment, they worry about being emotionally fit enough to handle marriage.

My first response to this is always complimentary. It's great to concern yourself with having a successful marriage. I appreciate that they don't want to rush into anything. What I encourage them to conquer, though, is their self-doubt.?

Coming from a divorced home isn't proof positive you won't be a suitable spouse. This is simply because of the resources now available for married couples. What you grew up with isn't necessarily who you are as an adult if you choose differently. Your fate is separate from that of your parents.?

You aren't on your own in marriage unless you want it that way. I'm not suggesting marriage counseling for couples who don't need it. Yet, maybe a wife struggling to keep a lid on her temper can find solace in an online forum. In other words, there are lots of places to go for help, even if it's for venting!

Those reading this who come from divorced homes, have faith your tenacity will carry you far in a marriage. You'll be surprised at your determination. For those not from a divorced home who worry their relationship isn't as easy as their parent's, have faith, too. Every relationship has different strains. Allow yourself that uncertainty and the answers will come more easily.

Before ending this post, I want to briefly mention I'm not pushing marriage on those who don't believe in it. I do think relationships are the best when a man wants to marry a woman. However, the purpose of this post is to encourage people to not underestimate themselves. Like Pink, you just might wake up one day with ten married years under your belt and think, "wow, I'm actually doing pretty good!"

Alnylam Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: ALNY) announced the results of pre-clinical studies today using its RNA interference (RNAi) technology which it says could lead to the development of more effective vaccine therapies for cancer as well as infectious diseases.

The results, published in the journal Cancer Immunology Immunotherapy, were of studies done by Alnylam?s collaborators at Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre in the Netherlands. Alnylam CEO John Maraganore told Mass High Tech that the university is applying RNAi - a method by which genes in cells can be turned off, preventing disease-causing proteins from being made - to dendritic cell (DC) cancer vaccines, which work by directing the body?s T-cells to specifically target cancer cells. One such vaccine is currently on the market for the treatment of prostate cancer through the Seattle, Wash. company, Dendreon Corp., said Maraganore.

The hope is that the vaccine can be made more effective through RNAi. Maraganore said that RNAi effectively boosts dendritic cell?s ability to attack cancer cells.

He said that the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre has some far conducted animal testing, but plans to advance into clinical studies within a year. Alnylam would stand to gain from any vaccine that eventually come on the market through the research, but said that financial arrangements are yet to be made. ?The first step is to develop the vaccine,? he said.

?While much progress has been made in the development of dendritic cell vaccines in cancer, there is a clear need to improve this strategy for increased clinical benefit. Specifically, further advancement of dendritic cell therapies requires an enhanced potency of the T-cell anti-tumor responses,? said Harry Dolstra, associate professor at Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre, Laboratory of Hematology, in a statement. ?These new findings show that a relatively simple ex vivo RNAi approach may be able to boost the effectiveness of cellular therapies in the treatment of cancer, and possibly chronic viral infections.?

Cambridge-based Alnylam is planning to have five drug candidates in clinical trials by the end of 2015 which all rely on the company?s gene-switching RNAi technology.

I?ve heard about this game in the works for Capcom but never really knew what it entailed. Apparently, it?s a memory based game where you can manipulate thoughts even when it comes to battle sequences to develop a whole new outcome. Kind of intuitive, kind of Inception based. I can?t fake. It sounds pretty interesting. Capcom always puts a unique spend on steath, sci-fi kinds of titles.

According to Wikipedia, ?Remember Me features exploration, platforming, and melee combat. The game introduces the mechanic of ?memory remixing?: entering and rearranging a target?s memories to manipulate them. Players accomplish this by replaying a memory and modifying details to change the target?s recollection of the outcome.?

The plot consists of a character named Nilin (voiced by Kezia Burrows), an amnesiac ?memory hunter?, through the streets of Neo-Paris in the year 2084. This dystopian future features a surveillance state Nilin?s former employer, Memoryeyes, erases her memories to neutralize her and she must discover why and how to restore them.The game opens with Nilin in Bastille Prison. The developers they are working with Dontnod Entertainment have experience working on games such as Rainbow Six, Heavy Rain, and Burnout. I?m interested in seeing how this collaboration will play out.

Just looking from that opening scene I automatically get the feeling of Cybersix. Does anyone remember that show? Well, it?s a classic. I?ll tell you that! LOL. This is a very dark kind of game. SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - State officials say oil production in New Mexico rose by 13 percent last year, but natural gas production declined.

Top budget and tax officials in Gov. Susana Martinez's administration told the Legislative Finance Committee on Wednesday in Angel Fire that oil production reached 78 million barrels in the fiscal year ending in June. Economists expect production to gradually grow to about 86 million barrels in the next few years.

Higher oil prices have spurred production and are providing a revenue boost to the state.

Taxes and royalties from energy production are expected to account for 16 percent of the state's total revenue this year.

Lawmakers were told that gas production fell by about 1 percent last year and that prices remain low mainly because of increased natural gas supplies nationwide.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Phone companies are losing the high-speed Internet game. In the second quarter, the landline phone industry lost broadband subscribers for the first time, as cable companies continued to pile on new household and small business customers, thanks to the higher speeds they offer in most areas.

The flow of subscribers from phone companies to cable providers could lead to a de facto monopoly on broadband in many areas of the U.S., say industry watchers. That could mean a lack of choice and higher prices.

Phone lines, designed to carry conversations, and often decades old, are poorly suited to carry Internet signals compared to the heavily shielded cables that carry TV signals. That means cable companies find it much easier and cheaper to provide fast Internet service compared to the digital subscriber lines, or DSL, that phone companies provide in most areas.

Cable providers now offer download speeds of 100 megabits per second in many areas, about 20 times faster than DSL.

The country?s largest Internet service provider is cable company Comcast Corp., with 18.7 million, followed by AT&T, with 16.4 million

Verizon Communications Inc., the country?s second-largest phone company, has replaced its phone lines with optical fiber in some areas, letting it compete on speed with cable. But expanding service is expensive, so Verizon has stopped adding new areas to its FiOS build-out.

AT&T Inc., the largest phone company in the U.S., has taken a more conservative approach to optical fiber, building it out to neighborhoods but not all the way to homes. The Internet signal is still carried the last stretch, into the home, on a phone line. This build-out is less costly than Verizon?s, but doesn?t let AT&T compete with the fastest cable connections.

The AP?s tally of reports from the eight largest phone companies in the U.S. shows they collectively lost 70,000 broadband subscribers in the April to June period. Meanwhile, the top four public cable companies reported a gain of 290,000 subscribers.

AT&T accounted for the bulk of the loss ? 96,000 subscribers ? while other companies on average added a few thousand subscribers.

The second quarter is a traditionally weak one for all broadband providers, since college students cancel their subscriptions before heading home for the summer. The picture for phone companies is less dire when considering the last 12 months, a period during which they added nearly 600,000 subscribers. However, cable companies added more than three times as many.

Phone companies were early in hooking up people to the Internet, and grabbed a lead in the broadband build-out of the early 2000s. The tide turned in 2008, and cable companies have been adding subscribers at the expense of phone companies since then.

Now, phone companies account for 43 percent of U.S. homes connected to broadband, according to Leichtman Research Group, with cable connecting the rest.

Analyst Craig Moffett at Sanford Bernstein called the decline in broadband a ?body blow? to phone companies, which have been using broadband to offset a long-running loss of subscribers to regular phone service. Now, both are declining, he noted.

Susan Crawford, a professor at Cardozo Law School in New York and a former assistant to President Obama on telecommunications, has argued that a looming cable monopoly in three-quarters of the country is ?the central crisis of our communications era.? She suggests that the U.S. follow the example of countries that have forced cable providers to allow other companies provide Internet service over their cables. The service-providers would compete with each other and provide some choice to the consumer, she says.

The industry has resisted this type of arrangement in the past, insisting that freedom from regulation provides them with an incentive to invest in their systems and upgrade speeds.

'A lot of work is done on geckos that looks at the very small adhesive structures on their toes to really understand how the system works at the most basic level', says Stark. She adds that the animals grip surfaces with microscopic hairs on the soles of their feet that make close enough contact to be attracted to the surface by the minute van der Waals forces between atoms. However, she and her colleagues Timothy Sullivan and Peter Niewiarowski were curious about how the lizards cope on surfaces in their natural habitat.

Explaining that previous studies had focused on the reptiles clinging to artificial dry surfaces, Stark says 'We know they are in tropical environments that probably have a lot of rain and it's not like the geckos fall out of the trees when it's wet'. Yet, the animals do seem to have trouble getting a grip on smooth wet surfaces, sliding down wet vertical glass after a several steps even though minute patches of the animal's adhesive structures do not slip under humid conditions on moist glass. The team decided to find out how Tokay geckos with wet feet cope on wet and dry surfaces, and publish their discovery that geckos struggle to remain attached as their feet get wetter in The Journal of Experimental Biology at http://jeb.biologists.org.

But first they had to find out how well their geckos clung onto glass with dry feet. Fitting a tiny harness around the lizard's pelvis and gently lowering the animal onto a plate of smooth glass, Stark and Sullivan allowed the animal to become well attached before connecting the harness to a tiny motor and gently pull the lizard until it came unstuck. The geckos hung on tenaciously, and only came unstuck at forces of around 20N, which is about 20 times their own body weight. 'The gecko attachment system is over-designed', says Stark.

Next, the trio sprayed the glass plate with a mist of water and retested the lizards, but this time the animals had problems holding tight: the attachment force varied each time they took a step. The droplets were interfering with the lizards' attachment mechanism, but it wasn't clear how. And when the team immersed the geckos in a bath of room temperature water with a smooth glass bottom, the animals were completely unable to anchor themselves to the smooth surface. 'The toes are superhydrophobic [water repellent]', explains Stark, who could see a silvery bubble of air around their toes, but they were unable to displace the water around their feet to make the tight van der Waals contacts that usually keep the geckos in place.

Then, the team tested the lizard's adhesive forces on the dry surface when their feet had been soaking for 90min and found that the lizards could barely hold on, detaching when they were pulled with a force roughly equalling their own weight. 'That might be the sliding behaviour that we see when the geckos climb vertically up misted glass', says Stark. So, geckos climbing on wet surfaces with damp feet are constantly on the verge of slipping and Stark adds that when the soggy lizards were faced with the misted and immersed horizontal surfaces, they slipped as soon as the rig started pulling.

Therefore geckos can walk on wet surfaces, so long as their feet are reasonably dry. However, as soon as their feet get wet, they are barely able to hang on and the team is keen to understand how long it takes geckos to recover from a drenching.

"I killed it," Austin Wierschke said, holding a check for his prize money in New York's Times Square where the contest, sponsored by LG Mobile, took place.

Wierschke, the contest's 2011 champion, beat out 10 others, aged 16 to 24, who had been winnowed down from over 100,000 competitors during preliminary rounds conducted since May.

The contenders texted a line from "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" while wearing black out goggles, transcribed a phrase written backward, and completed other challenges meant to test their texting accuracy, speed and dexterity.

Wierschke, a high school student from the small town of Rhinelander in northeastern Wisconsin, won by texting a 149-character message with capitalization, punctuation and various symbols, in 39 seconds.

He is the only two-time winner of the 5-year-old texting competition, the nation's largest.

"I'll see you next year... bring it on," said Wierschke.

Wierschke said he practiced by texting friends, typing up random phrases and words, and having his mom read off phrases that he would text with his eyes closed.

Kent Augustine, 16, from New York, lost to Wierschke by a few seconds in the last round.

This year's group of competitors, flown from Montana, Texas and California among other states, is a sign of the continued popularity of texting, the contenders all agreed.

"I like texting because you think more about what you say," Wierschke said.

LG Mobile is a unit of LG Electronics.

Based on a poll of 2,250 older adults, USA Today recently proclaimed, ?Life?s just good for most older Americans.? The article said that most seniors are content with their finances, their health and where they live, and are the most optimistic about the years to come.

Does this really represent an accurate picture of older Americans? Well, to start off, let?s get some perspective. According to the 2010 census, there are currently 40.3 million people in the US who are 65 or older. And the fastest growing segment of this group are those 85-94 years old. Their numbers have increased 29.9% from 2000 to 2010.

People who are 85 and older are increasingly suffering from chronic, limiting illnesses or conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis and senile dementia. These conditions make them increasingly dependent on others for help in performing activities of dally living.

National data indicates that over 80% of older adults with limitations in three or more ADL?s are still able to live in the community, but not without help. Fifty to sixty percent rely on informal family caregivers.

At LIFE ElderCare the majority of people we serve are over 85, but during the past year the number of younger seniors has increased. One example is Mary, 71 and her husband Michael, 73. After Mary suffered a few minor strokes and Michael lost his vision to macular degeneration, they found themselves without transportation and were unable to buy groceries, get to doctor appointments or maintain the upkeep on their Fremont home without family and outside assistance.

They both feel a deep sense of sadness about the prospect of having to sell their home to move into assisted living. ?We always imagined a retirement of traveling and good times,? says Michael, ?but you never know when illness is going to strike. This is not how we envisioned retirement.?

A group of young adults ban together to create a street drug that will demolish competition substances and place them at the top of the game using a substance they managed to snatch from a "loyal investor" that was based in a a military site not far from town .....only they destroy more than just the competition. After witnessing a person become enraged, dangerous, and nearly impossible to kill after a single injection of their "super drug", the group becomes fearful and deposes of the drug in a less than smart manner.....by burning the rest in a bon fire at the edge of town. They thought they had dodged the bullet...but they were wrong. Soon plant life demolished, and rivers turned black.....it wasn't long before locals began to act strange.

As murder rates skyrocketed, strange reports poured in about people turning on family, friends, and even complete strangers who happened to be near by. But it wasn't the killing that worried those lucky enough to remain sane....it was the appearance of the murderers and their bewildering actions. Whites of their eyes bleed red, and stood out against ghostly pale skin....almost appearing blue. Their nails blackened, as well as their teeth, and they screeched as if unable to speak. They fed on anything...living or not...and soon those who remained sane withered down to scarcely anyone. When the military finally stepped in, it brought hope....only they weren't looking to save anyone. They saw the town as a lost cause, and destroyed it. They said they had saved millions by sacrificing a few.....but they doomed everyone. Air born, the sickness spread. With every rain storm or windy day came a new town over run with rage. Nobody could figure out a cause....no one but the people who started it all.

The sickness took on the name Macabre Rage, and soon it wiped out nations. The only things that seemed immune where a few types of plants, and a couple of animal species with slightly raised body temperatures. The group sets out to fix what they destroyed....no matter the cost. The only hope was to discover what exactly they had put into their little "science project", and what it's purpose was.

If having the living dead after you isn't terrible enough, what are you suppose to do when your enemy becomes the individuals who are meant to serve and protect you? As the group draws closer to the answer of a cure....knew questions arise; What is the military hiding...and why would they create something capable of causing such havoc? Soon their little science project doesn't seem like it was such a secret. Could it be they wanted this to happen, and if so, for what purpose?

ScienceDaily (Aug. 8, 2012) ? Chronic exposure to even small amounts of staph bacteria could be a risk factor for the chronic inflammatory disease lupus, Mayo Clinic research shows. Staph, short for Staphylococcus aureus, is a germ commonly found on the skin or in the nose, sometimes causing infections. In the Mayo study, mice were exposed to low doses of a protein found in staph and developed a lupus-like disease, with kidney disease and autoantibodies like those found in the blood of lupus patients.

The findings are published online this month in The Journal of Immunology. The next step is to study lupus patients to see if the staph protein in question plays a similar role in humans, says co-author Vaidehi Chowdhary, M.D., a Mayo Clinic rheumatologist.

"We think this protein could be an important clue to what may cause or exacerbate lupus in certain genetically predisposed patients," Dr. Chowdhary says. "Our hope is to confirm these findings in lupus patients and hopefully prevent flares."

Another key question is whether treating at-risk people to eradicate staph can prevent lupus from forming in the first place. Lupus occurs when the immune system attacks tissues and joints. It may affect virtually any part of the body and can be tough to diagnose because it often mimics other ailments. There is no cure, only treatment to control symptoms. Lupus is more commonly diagnosed in women, African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians and people 15 to 40.

The cause is often unknown; it appears people genetically predisposed to lupus may develop it when something in the environment triggers it, such as infections, certain drugs or even sunlight.

Physicians do not really know what causes lupus, so the discovery of the staph protein's possible role is exciting, Dr. Chowdhary says.

In the mice studied, a staph protein known as a staphylococcal enterotoxin B, or SEB, activated autoreactive T and B lymphocytes, a type of white blood cells, leading to an inflammatory illness mirroring lupus. Research on people has shown that carrying staph bacteria is linked to autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis, Kawasaki disease and graulomatosis with polyangiitis.

The lupus study was funded by the National Institutes of Health, an American College of Rheumatology Research and Education Foundation Career Development Bridge Funding Award, a Ronald F. Kinney Executive Dean for Research Career Development Award from Mayo Foundation and a Mayo Clinic Research Early Career Development Award.

The research team included Ashenafi Tilahun; Chad Clark; Joseph Grande, M.D., Ph.D.; and Govindarajan Rajagopalan, Ph.D., all of Mayo Clinic.
