CAIRO (Reuters) - A sheikh who blends hardline Islamism with revolutionary zeal is emerging as a frontrunner in the race for the Egyptian presidency, buoyed by a popular touch which even his critics say is striking a chord with many voters.
Hazem Salah Abu Ismail's message has moved from the mosque to the masses in the year since Hosni Mubarak was swept from power, helped by a campaign which to date appears one of the best funded. His posters are everywhere, put up by dedicated supporters to whom he is both a celebrity and visionary.
"This man knows how to speak to people in their own language," said Aladin Nounou, a factory owner who says most of his 600 workers count themselves as Abu Ismail admirers.
A lawyer by profession, Abu Ismail got a warm reception from thousands of adoring students at a Cairo University rally on Tuesday. A day later, there was another big turnout in Mansoura, a Nile Delta city north of the capital.
To liberals, leftists and others worried by the rise of Islamist influence in the post-Mubarak Egypt, the prominence of a man committed to a tighter application of Islamic law is yet another cause for concern about the direction of the country of 80 million. Islamist parties already dominate the parliament.
Analysts who discounted him a few months ago believe that Abu Ismail could make it to the second round of the election, foreseeing a run-off that might pit him against former Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, a liberal nationalist, or another of the candidates.
With the long beard of a Salafi Muslim, softly-spoken Abu Ismail is finding supporters among Egyptians who voted for both the Muslim Brotherhood and the ultraconservative Nour Party in the legislative elections. Together, they won two thirds of the parliament.
To date, neither has decided to field their own candidate for the presidency, though the Brotherhood is reviewing a previous decision not to run. Trying to project a moderate image, the group has distanced itself from the Salafis.
Abu Ismail is the most hardline of a group of independent Islamists running in the May election. He is campaigning under the slogan "We will live in dignity" - a statement splashed in conservative blue across T-shirts worn by his supporters.
FUNDING QUESTIONS
While he has said there should be no quick application of strict Islamic codes, his program says a Muslim ruler should work towards applying widely-accepted elements of the sharia, for example, by prohibiting alcohol - a step that could have a deep impact on an economy heavily dependent on tourism.
Abu Ismail's critics have gone online in an effort to undermine his credibility. He has been the focus of hundreds of irreverent jokes on the web.
There are also allegations - denied by his supporters - that Abu Ismail's funding is coming from the Gulf and that he is manipulating religious sentiment for political gain.
"There is something that is unequal," said a worker from a rival campaign. "The kind of money he is spending all over the country, the advertising, the fliers, the posters. We have no idea where his funding is coming from."
Abu Ismail does not shy away from controversy. In an interview with a religious TV channel posted on Youtube last year, he said he and al Qaeda shared the same goal - an apparent reference to an Islamic state - though he added that the militant network that advocates global jihad was "mistaken".
His supporters cite charisma, composure and an unambiguous commitment to religious law as some of his assets. "He is truly a sincere person," said Ahmed al-Sayed, a 21-year old engineering student who voted for the Brotherhood in the legislative election but is now campaigning for Abu Ismail.
"That mixture of charisma and Islamic law is something that is appealing. Nobody else is really offering that," said Shadi Hamid, an expert on Islamist movements at the Brookings Institute in Doha. "There is a place for right-wing populism."
In southern Egypt, Abu Ismail posters have been plastered to wells in villages that are hard to find on the map and near ancient Pharaonic temples. In one village, two of his admirers, both women, made no mention of his Islamist credentials but said they liked his soft tone and believed he had the patience to fix the country.
Abu Ismail's appearance at Cairo University on Tuesday offered a glimpse of the popularity he enjoys. Thousands of students squeezed into an auditorium to hear him speak, packing the aisles. Some perched precariously on window ledges.
"The people want Hazem Abu Ismail," they chanted, stamping their feet in unison and unleashing a deafening cheer as he took to the stage. Dozens of campaign workers formed a human chain to hold back crowd surges. At least one attendee fainted.
Jostled by supporters as he took his seat, a beaming Abu Ismail spoke for more than an hour, explaining how the country of 80 million had been held back intentionally, all the while maintaining the calm tone seen as one element of his appeal.
The economy had been forced into an over reliance on tourism to make it subservient to foreigners, he said, though he pledged to expand the industry's income eight-fold.
"WE ARE NOT A WEAK NATION"
Dressed in a suit and tie, he alleged that both United States and Israel were seeking to subvert the presidential election to their own ends and cited Iran as a model of a state that had shaken off U.S. influence to stand on its own feet.
He did, however, quickly point out his doctrinal differences with the Shi'ite Islam espoused by its theocratic government.
"The time has come, and hear these words clearly, for us to find the elements of our strength inside our country," he said, triggering chants of "Where are the journalists? The president is here".
"We are not a weak nation," he said.
"By attacking those who are perceived as our victimizers, he hits a favorable chord with his audience," said Mustapha Kamel Al-Sayyid, a professor of political science at Cairo University. "He speaks in a very soft way, using a language that is quite appealing to the Egyptian people."
At 50, Abu Ismail is one of the younger of the frontrunners for the presidency. Moussa is 75. Others include Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh, another independent Islamist who was expelled from the Brotherhood last year for deciding to run against it wishes.

Could crowdsourced GPS navigation be the next big thing? Waze gives you voice-enabled GPS directions on your iOS, Android, BlackBerry (currently in beta), or Symbian-powered Nokia phone. Best of all, it's free. It's far from perfect, but if you're willing to trade some routing accuracy for features you can't find on other navigation apps, like real world travel times and up-to-the-minute, user-reported traffic jams, Waze is certainly worth checking out.
Crowdsourcing, Interface, and Routing For this review, I tested Waze 3.1.1 on an Apple iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless. It's a 20.9MB download, and works on any iPhone or iPad with iOS 4.0 or later. Android owners already have free voice-enabled GPS navigation, and even the free Google Maps Navigation in Android lacks crowdsourced route data.
So here's how it works: Waze connects you to other drivers automatically (and anonymously) in the background. The app then pools data from everyone and channels it into more efficient, time-saving routing algorithms based on real world trip data from other users, not just what the map data infers. This is essentially what TomTom does with its long-standing IQ Routes feature, but we've never seen it on a free phone app before.
That said, crowdsourcing isn't a panacea, as the app's underlying routing algorithms need to be sound. It's here where Waze begins to fall flat. For example, I experienced some trouble with the start of a route on the east side in New York City. In order to go to central New Jersey, and unlike the Garmin n?vi 3590LMT ($399.99, 4 stars) I had on hand for comparison, Waze wanted to send me down the FDR, through Brooklyn, and through Staten Island, which, frankly, is completely insane. The ETA also jumped around numerous times, sometimes by as much as 30 or 40 minutes, until it finally settled in.
Once I got going and ignored the initial instructions, Waze figured out a better route by the time I had driven several avenues west across Manhattan. From there, it had no problem navigating me to my destination, although there were a few additional missteps. First, it stumbled on the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel, and wanted me to drive around in what amounted to a near-circle instead of taking the immediately available entrance. And at the end of my trip, Waze claimed victory early and registered the route complete several blocks away from my actual destination address?even though it was part of a retirement community built in 2005.?
Navigation, ETA, and Audio Waze isn't a particularly full featured as a navigation app, either. While en route, Waze doesn't display your current speed or the current road speed limit, and there's no 2D or 3D lane assistance. On the plus side, the colorful, animated traffic icons showing the current status and delay times looked sharp on the map on my iPhone 4.
Despite Waze's uncertainty in the beginning of trips with regard to ETA, it actually did a better job overall in testing than other navigation apps I've tested. You can tell it's crowdsourcing data, because it knows that even if a route is technically shorter, you could still end up taking just as long as the longer way on the highway, because of all the street lights. I watched several instances where Waze nailed the ETA in actuality, whereas the Garmin GPS guessed I'd arrive earlier, only to adjust itself as the trip went on to eventually match what Waze had said all along.?
There's also text-to-speech support, but it's not perfect. The voice prompt timing was a little less well tuned than the standalone Garmin n?vi 3590LMT, but I still had no problem following where Waze wanted me to go. While Waze read exit names correctly on the highway, it generally ommitted street names in favor of a basic "In 0.3 miles, take a right," followed by "take a right," which was disappointing. It doesn't tell you the name of the exit in advance, either. It will say, "In one mile, get ready to exit on the right," but won't say the actual exit name until when you're right on top of it, which is a little inconvenient.
On the plus side, voice prompts sounded full and warm, with just a touch of distortion (mainly from excessive limiting, in order to make the most of the iPhone 4's tiny speaker). I heard a few pronunciation gaffes, including "Geo Gia" for Georgia?although once I exited the highway, it got Georgia correct; apparently different modes use different pronunciation dictionaries.?
Incident Reporting, Lock Screen, and Conclusions Tap the exclamation point on the bottom right, and it will pop up nine icons to report an accident, police activity, heavy traffic, and other road hazards. In landscape mode, it will only show six icons, though; you need to scroll to the right to see the other three. Still, this is where Waze really shines; the app popped up plenty of real-time traffic alerts during my various testing. And on one test route in particular, Waze popped up an alert that there was police activity coming up 400 feet ahead. And there was! There was a cop car at the side of the road with its lights on. Waze prompted me to either give it a thumbs up (meaning the report was correct), tell it that it was close but not exact, or tell it that there was in fact no cop present.
One other glitch: Waze didn't disable my iPhone's lock screen, the way TomTom, Magellan, and other navigation apps do. After a few minutes, the screen turned off while I was driving. When I pressed the power button to light up the screen again, it wanted me to enter my lock screen code. This is not good at 75 miles per hour. You can disable the iPhone's screen lock and re-enable it later, of course, but that's a clumsy thing to have to do each time you get in and out of the car.
Overall, Waze offers a fine, free GPS navigation solution, and with its heavy emphasis on crowdsourcing, it even offers some features that top brand names in navigation currently lack. On the other hand, its routing still needs plenty of work, and it could be more informative once on the road, both visually and audibly. The app has a bit of a revolutionary feel to it, thanks to its enthusiastic community of users, and thanks to the fact that it's free. If that appeals to you, by all means download Waze and give it a go. UKers hoping for a hasty rollout of Everything Everywhere's 4G LTE network are apt to be sorely disappointed, as regulation entity Ofcom has shoved back the final decision on its proposal. We're told that the ruling will be moved from April 17th to May 8th, with the decision made to give stakeholders more time to respond. With the additional weeks, folks like O2 and Vodafone are expected to voice their own thoughts (read: objections) on the matter, likely pointing out that its proposal would give Everything Everywhere the lion's share of spectrum in the 1,800MHz range. For now, we'll have to wait and see what kind of rebuttals are cooked up, and if history is any guide, we're guessing one or two more delays will be making themselves known before we get a definite answer one way or the other.

Findings provide new insights into effect of high-fat diets on cholesterol levels and weight gain in cats
A collaborative team of researchers has found that cats are able to consume a diet relatively high in fat without raising cholesterol levels. The research also showed that, as long as cats' daily calorie intake remains constant, increasing the proportion of fat in the diet will not affect the likelihood of weight gain. The findings advance understanding of how cats handle dietary fat and reinforce the differences between the nutritional needs of cats and humans.
This research was conducted by scientists from the University of Glasgow and the WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition the science centre supporting Mars Petcare brands such as WHISKAS, ROYAL CANIN and NUTRO.
The study looked at the effects of increases in fat intake and changes in the ratio of saturated to polyunsaturated fatty acids on the levels of cholesterol and other lipids present in the blood of healthy adult cats. Based on studies in humans, it was thought that the diet high in saturated fat could lead to an increase in cholesterol, while the diet rich in polyunsaturated fat would have the opposite effect. In contrast, however, this research found that increasing the proportion of fat in the diet has no impact on cholesterol levels in healthy cats regardless of whether the fat is provided in the form of saturated or polyunsaturated fatty acids.
"These findings provide fundamental new insights into how exactly cats handle dietary fat and reinforce the crucial differences between the nutritional needs of cats and humans," commented Dr. Richard Butterwick, study author and Head of Nutrition at WALTHAM. "If the same diet fed in this study were given to humans, it would result in a significant increase in LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol a recognised risk factor for cardiovascular disease."
"The study findings therefore support previous research showing that cats have developed physiological coping mechanisms, which have enabled them to successfully evolve on a meat-based diet that is higher in protein and fat than that typically recommended for humans," Dr. Butterwick added.
The research also showed that increasing the proportion of fat in a cat's diet will not increase the likelihood of weight gain, provided that their daily calorie intake remains constant. This finding reinforces the importance of monitoring daily calorie intake, rather than fat alone, for keeping cats at a healthy body weight. The study forms part of a wider programme of ongoing collaborative research by WALTHAM into the impact of nutrition on body weight in cats and dogs.

Findings provide new insights into effect of high-fat diets on cholesterol levels and weight gain in cats
A collaborative team of researchers has found that cats are able to consume a diet relatively high in fat without raising cholesterol levels. The research also showed that, as long as cats' daily calorie intake remains constant, increasing the proportion of fat in the diet will not affect the likelihood of weight gain. The findings advance understanding of how cats handle dietary fat and reinforce the differences between the nutritional needs of cats and humans.
This research was conducted by scientists from the University of Glasgow and the WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition the science centre supporting Mars Petcare brands such as WHISKAS, ROYAL CANIN and NUTRO.
The study looked at the effects of increases in fat intake and changes in the ratio of saturated to polyunsaturated fatty acids on the levels of cholesterol and other lipids present in the blood of healthy adult cats. Based on studies in humans, it was thought that the diet high in saturated fat could lead to an increase in cholesterol, while the diet rich in polyunsaturated fat would have the opposite effect. In contrast, however, this research found that increasing the proportion of fat in the diet has no impact on cholesterol levels in healthy cats regardless of whether the fat is provided in the form of saturated or polyunsaturated fatty acids.
"These findings provide fundamental new insights into how exactly cats handle dietary fat and reinforce the crucial differences between the nutritional needs of cats and humans," commented Dr. Richard Butterwick, study author and Head of Nutrition at WALTHAM. "If the same diet fed in this study were given to humans, it would result in a significant increase in LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol a recognised risk factor for cardiovascular disease."
"The study findings therefore support previous research showing that cats have developed physiological coping mechanisms, which have enabled them to successfully evolve on a meat-based diet that is higher in protein and fat than that typically recommended for humans," Dr. Butterwick added.
The research also showed that increasing the proportion of fat in a cat's diet will not increase the likelihood of weight gain, provided that their daily calorie intake remains constant. This finding reinforces the importance of monitoring daily calorie intake, rather than fat alone, for keeping cats at a healthy body weight. The study forms part of a wider programme of ongoing collaborative research by WALTHAM into the impact of nutrition on body weight in cats and dogs.

CoreLogic, a California-based provider of real estate information and analytics, issued a report that home prices in the Fort Worth-Arlington area decreased in January from a year ago. While this might be seen as bad news, this figure includes the sales of distressed properties and only represents a 1.9 percent drop compared with January 2011. Without the distressed sales included, home prices in the area are actually increasing by 3 percent. Distressed sales include short sales and real-estate-owned transactions, or properties sold by lenders.
Nationally, the trend was lower. Home prices, including distressed sales, declined by 3.1 percent in January, the sixth consecutive monthly decline. However, when distressed sales are excluded, prices were seen to still be declining by 0.9 percent. So things are definitely better than the national average here in the Arlington area.
CoreLogic?s chief economist Mark Fleming, commenting on the report, said, ?Although home price declines are slowly improving and not far from the bottom, home prices are down to nearly the same levels as 10 years ago.?
In another report, the company found that completed foreclosures were down across the nation in January. There were 69,000 completed foreclosures in January 2012 as compared to 80,000 in January 2011. Texas ranked fifth as the state with the largest number of completed foreclosures over the last year ending in January 2012 with some 57,000.

Director Brad Bird juices and gooses the whole affair with edge and excitement, new energy, humor and heartbeat, and a terrific feel for big, bold, audaciously daring sequences that beg for the biggest screen available.

CoreLogic, a California-based provider of real estate information and analytics, issued a report that home prices in the Fort Worth-Arlington area decreased in January from a year ago. While this might be seen as bad news, this figure includes the sales of distressed properties and only represents a 1.9 percent drop compared with January 2011. Without the distressed sales included, home prices in the area are actually increasing by 3 percent. Distressed sales include short sales and real-estate-owned transactions, or properties sold by lenders.
