Stone Age pebble may be oldest engraving ever

A colorful pebble bearing a sequence of linear incisions may be the world's oldest engraving.

The object, which will be described in the April issue of the Journal of Archaeology, dates back about 100,000 years ago and could also be the world?s oldest known abstract art. It was recovered from Klasies River Cave in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.

?Associated human remains indicate that the engraved piece was certainly made by Homo sapiens,? co-author Riaan Rifkin of the University of Witwatersrand?s Institute for Human Evolution told Discovery News.

Rifkin and colleagues Francesco d?Errico and Renata Garcia Moreno performed extensive non-invasive analyses of the object. Methods like X-ray fluorescence and microscopic analysis enabled the researchers to examine every minute detail of the ochre pebble, which appears to have split off from a once larger piece.

The scientists conclude that humans intentionally made the sub-parallel linear incisions on the Middle Stone Age pebble.

?Upon engraving the piece with a sharp lithic implement, it is likely to have produced a markedly bright and dark red-maroon powder,? Rifkin said. ?The design may therefore have been strikingly visible shortly after it was produced.?

Ochre is a mineral-rich, naturally tinted clay that primarily consists of hydrated iron oxide. Ochre was among the earliest pigments used by humans and possibly other hominids for artistic purposes. Some even refer to it as the caveman's "crayon."

The Klasies River object measures close to 3 inches in length and contains a series of seven ?deep broad engraved lines and several, about 16 or so, narrower and somewhat shallower linear features,? Rifkin said. ?The fragment is a remnant of a formerly semi-circular ochre pebble that likely contained a much more extensive engraved design on its surface.?

Of particular interest now is whether or not the engraver made the design with symbolic intent. Use of symbols and meaningful images is thought to have been a significant breakthrough in human development. Language, math and countless other studies are tied to this basic skill, in addition to improved communication. To this day, art permits communication of identity and other things among diverse cultures.

Both linear and crosshatch engraved patterns may have been common thousands of years ago. Similar designs appear on engraved ochres from Blombos Cave, also in South Africa, and on ostrich eggshell fragments found in the Diepkloof Rock Shelter in the Western Cape Province. Some of these, and other, similar objects may even predate the Klasies River pebble, but studies on them are ongoing.

Christopher Henshilwood, a researcher at the University of Witwatersrand, did not work on this study, but he has examined other very early probable engravings. For example, he studied abstract markings of another piece of ochre dating to around 70,000 years ago.

In that case, the engraving consisted of a more complex geometric pattern that looks like the letter ?X? repeated in a connected series.

The possible meaning of these lines remains a mystery, ?but they are symbols that I think could have been interpreted by those people as having meaning that would have been understood by others,? Henshilwood said.

At present, Rifkin and his team are studying 30,000-year old cave art from Africa. So far, they have determined that the abstract images depict a zebra, a rhino and a half human-half cat therianthorpe.

An article published in Physical Review and conducted by researchers at the universities of Granada and Barcelona might lead to a revolutionary change in water desalination and filtration methods.

Researchers at the universities of Granada and Barcelona have described for the first time the diffusion of liquid water through nanochannels in molecular terms; nanochannels are extremely tiny channels with a diameter of 1-100 nanometers that scientists use to study the behavior of molecules (nm. a unit of length in the metric system equal to one billionth of a meter that is used in the field of nanotechnology).

This study might have an important impact on water desalinization and filtration methods. Two articles published in Science state that the introduction of graphene membranes and carbon nanolayers will revolutionize water desalinization and filtration processes, as water diffuses rapidly through these materials when their pores are 1nm in diameter.

Liquid water exhibits a range of unusual properties that other chemical compounds do not have: up to 65 abnormalities. Some of these abnormalities have been known for 300 years, as the fact that water expands below 4?C.

Many of the abnormalities found in water have a dynamic nature -e.g. water molecules move faster as density increases-, as a result of the properties of the hydrogen bond networks that form between water molecules; hydrogen bonds lead to the formation of tetrahedral structures wherein a central atom is located at the center with four molecules located at the corners. However, this geometrical structure changes with pressure and temperature and, until now, changes in the molecular structure and properties of liquid water had not been described.

A Mystery to Solve

Particularly confusing are the results on the diffusion of water confined between two hydrophobic plates. Neither experiments nor computer-based models have clarified whether confinement increases or reduces the mobility of water molecules. However, it seems that the mobility of water molecules relies on ducts having a diameter above or below 1nm.

In a study published in the prestigious journal Physical Review, professors Francisco de los Santos Fern?ndez (University of Granada) and Giancarlo Franzese (University of Barcelona) described the behavior of water confined between two hydrophobic plates. In their study, Franzese and Fernandez used models to demonstrate that the diffusion of nanoconfined water is unusually fast, as a result of the competition between the formation and breaking of hydrogen bonds, and the free volume available for cooperative molecule rearrangement.

In nanochannels above 1 nm in diameter, macroscopic diffusion of water only occurs if there is a cooperative rearrangement of molecules, which leads to HB breaking within a cooperative region of 1nm in size. On the other hand, diffusion increases in nanochannels below 1 nm, as fewer HBs need to be broken. Thus, this study proves that the interplay between hydrogen bond breaking and cooperative rearranging within regions of 1-nm determine the macroscopic properties of water.

• In another study comparing colonoscopy and fecal immunochemical testing, the numbers of participants in whom colorectal cancer was detected were similar but more adenomas were found in the colonoscopy group.

Deaths from colorectal cancer were only half as common among people who had precancerous intestinal polyps removed during colonoscopy as in the general population, researchers said.

In a study of 2,602 people who had adenomatous polyps removed and were followed for a median of 15.8 years, 12 died of colorectal cancer ? whereas data from the federal Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database would predict 25 colorectal cancer deaths in this number of people, according to Ann G. Zauber, PhD, of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, and colleagues.

The findings are some of the strongest evidence yet that colonoscopy with polyp removal not only reduces colorectal cancer incidence, but actually saves lives.

Meanwhile, preliminary results from a separate study suggested that frequent fecal immunochemical testing (FIT) is not an adequate substitute for colonoscopy if the goal is colorectal cancer prevention.

Spanish researchers conducting a randomized trial found polyp detection and removal rates were far lower in those screened by FIT, overwhelming a modestly higher ? and still very low ? screening acceptance rate among those offered FIT screening.

Both studies were published in the Feb. 23 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

In an accompanying editorial, two Norwegian researchers called colonoscopy ?an effective screening test when compliance is adequate.?

Michael Bretthauer, MD, PhD, of Oslo University, and Mette Kalager, MD, of Telemark Hospital in Skien, Norway, suggested that offering colonoscopy as a one-time ?triage? test at age 60 might be an attractive screening strategy.

The results could be used ?to classify persons as having a low risk of colorectal cancer (no adenomas detected) or a high risk (adenomas detected, particularly advanced ones), with strict surveillance for the latter group but no further screening for the former,? they wrote.

Bretthauer and Kalager noted that, in the study by Zauber and colleagues, it was not only the initial polypectomy but also ?strict surveillance? afterward that likely created the mortality benefit.

Zauber and colleagues were reporting long-term outcomes in the National Polyp Study (NPS), which enrolled patients undergoing colonoscopy at seven U.S. clinical centers.

It was structured as a randomized trial in which those with adenomatous polyps removed were rescreened either twice in the next three years (at years one and three) or just once at year three. Both groups were rescreened six years after polypectomy.

In the current report, however, death outcomes were reported only for both groups combined, and also for another group of 773 patients seen in NPS clinics who had nonadenomatous polyps removed. Deaths in study participants were determined from the National Death Index.

Also, Zauber and colleagues did not report outcomes of the surveillance colonoscopies, such as whether additional adenomatous or nonademonatous polyps were detected or removed.

On the basis of the SEER data, covering patients matched to NPS participants by age, sex, race, and other factors, the researchers estimated that 25.4 colorectal cancer deaths should occur in their adenoma population of 2,602.

Thus, the 12 deaths that did occur represented a 53% reduction in colorectal cancer mortality (ratio 0.47, 95% CI 0.26 to 0.80). The deaths occurred from six to 22 years after polypectomy, including four in the first nine years.

In the nonadenomatous cohort, with median follow-up of 16.5 years, there was one death within 10 years of polyp removal and none later on.

Limitations to the study included its reliance on the National Death Index and SEER data, and the possibility that the NPS clinics were not representative of colonoscopy providers generally.

The second study was reported by Antoni Castells, MD, PhD, of the Hospital Clinic in Barcelona, and colleagues. It involved early results from a projected 10-year study of biennial FIT versus one-time colonoscopy.

The trial is designed to compare mortality outcomes, but at this point ? just two years into the study ? Castells and colleagues reported only on acceptance of FIT and colonoscopy and the initial detection rates.

More than 50,000 people across Spain were randomized to be offered FIT, to be conducted every two years, or colonoscopy performed in the first year of the study.

The invitees were given no special incentives to participate other than the offer of an appointment at a local screening office, as well as information on colorectal cancer screening and the study?s rationale.

Rates of actual screening were low: 24.6% of those assigned to colonoscopy and 34.2% of those invited for FIT.

But although nearly 50% more FIT invitees received the screening, rates of detection of advanced and nonadvanced adenomas were much lower.

Among those receiving colonoscopy, advanced adenomas were found in 1.9%, versus 0.9 of the FIT-screened participants. Corresponding rates of nonadvanced adenoma detection were 4.2% with colonoscopy versus 0.4% with FIT.

Castells and colleagues indicated that the effect on mortality would have to await the final results of the study?s full 10 years.

But, in the editorial, Bretthauer and Kalager were skeptical that FIT could match, let alone better, the results of colonoscopy as the study goes on.

?Compliance data for the FIT group are only for the first round, and compliance with fecal screening has been shown to decrease over time,? they wrote.

Bretthauer and Kalager also pointed to the higher adenoma detection rates with colonoscopy, and the very low absolute detection rate with FIT ? which, they asserted, ?indicates that FIT is not a good test for detecting adenomas.?

The study by Zauber and colleagues was funded by the National Cancer Institute and the Cantor Colon Cancer Fund. All study authors declared they had no relevant financial interests.

The study by Castells and colleagues was funded by numerous government agencies and foundations in Spain. Eiken Chemical, Palex Medical, and Biogen Diagnostics supplied materials for FIT. No other relationships with commercial entities were reported.

Bretthauer reported receiving research support from Olympus Optical and Falk Pharma. Kalager indicated that she had no relevant financial interests.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? U.S. film and television writers gave their top two movie awards on Sunday to romance ?Midnight in Paris? and drama ?The Descendants? in the final Hollywood guild awards show before next week?s Oscars.

Writer-director Woody Allen won the Writers Guild of America award for best original screenplay with ?Midnight in Paris,? his tale of a young writer in Paris who faces questions of love.

?The Descendants,? which tells of a man who brings his family together in a time of grief while his cheating wife is hospitalized, earned the WGA trophy for best adapted screenplay for writers Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash.

The awards give both movies a lift in the race for the Oscars, the world?s top film honors, because many guild members also belong to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that gives out the Oscars on February 26.

But the guilds have recognized a variety of films this year, making them an inexact forecaster for Oscar success. Earlier this year, the director and producer guilds put ?The Artist? atop their list of best films, but ?The Artist? was not eligible for a WGA trophy because it was created by French writers.

The Screen Actors Guild singled out the performers of civil rights drama ?The Help? for its top honor, best ensemble cast, but the WGA went for ?The Descendants? over ?The Help? in the WGA?s category for best adapted screenplay.

WGA voters did honor ?The Help? writer and director Tate Taylor with a special award recognizing work that embodies the spirit of civil rights and liberties.

Backstage, Taylor told reporters the movie?s success at box offices last summer and during the current award season had been ?fantastic,? and he called ?The Help? a ?labor of love.?

?It?s my first adaptation, which I think was a blessing because I just went for it,? Taylor said.

The WGA also gave out an award to documentary movie ?Better This World.?

Best TV drama series went to ?Breaking Bad,? and the writers of ?Modern Family? claimed the prize for TV comedy series. ?Homeland? was named best new TV series.

Female Cancer Survivors Have 'Worse Health Behaviors' Than Women With No Cancer History

Newswise ? TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 15, 2012) ? A recent study conducted by researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla., and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., has found that female cancer survivors receiving screening mammography have ?worse health behaviors? than women receiving mammography screening and who had never had cancer.

The study was published in a recent issue of the American Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Researchers surveyed 19,948 women age 35 and older presenting for screening mammography with no prior breast cancer and compared their responses of 2,713 cancer survivors, also receiving screening mammography. The two groups were compared on smoking behaviors; alcohol use; physical activity; weight status; and vitamin use.

Study results demonstrated that:

? Cancer survivors age 30-49 had greater rates of smoking when compared with those with no cancer history.
? Cancer survivors were less likely than those with no cancer history to use alcohol monthly or greater. Younger cancer survivors were the most frequent alcohol users.
? Cancer survivors were less likely than those with no cancer history to engage in ?strenuous exercise.? Regardless of cancer history, older participants were more likely than their juniors to engage in ?mild exercise.?
? Body Mass Index did not differ by cancer survivor status. However, cancer survivors reported less weight gain than the noncancer group over the last five years.
? Cancer survivors were more likely to use more than three vitamins.
? Cancer survivors were more likely than those with no cancer history to rate their overall health as ?poor.?

?These results suggest that there are opportunities for tailored behavioral health risk factor interventions for cancer survivors,? said study author Sarah M. Rausch, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist and director of Integrative Medicine at Moffitt. ?The differences in health behaviors between cancer survivors and those with no cancer history afford a ?teachable moment? in which a cancer survivor may be motivated to change behaviors to promote a healthier lifestyle and prevent cancer recurrence.?

In the survey, cervical cancer survivors reported having many unhealthy lifestyles, consistent with other surveys examining health behaviors of cancer survivors.

?As the population of cancer survivors increases, the importance of health status and quality of life of cancer survivors is even more critical,? explained Rausch. ?Approximately 10.5 million people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with cancer. Because of the progress in cancer diagnosis and treatment there is a growing population of cancer survivors.?

According to the study authors, of the half million cancer deaths annually in the U.S. (they cited statistics from 2006 in their study) one-third of cancer deaths were attributed to tobacco use and one third was attributable to poor diet, physical inactivity and obesity.

?Studies, including ours, have found that cancer survivors are not as healthy as the general public,? said Rausch. ?As our study demonstrated, unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking and alcohol use, and a lack of physical exercise among cancer survivors presenting for screening mammography, may account for their generally less than healthy status when compared to their peers, who also presented for screening mammography, but who had never had a cancer diagnosis.?

The researchers concluded that the ?teachable moment? drawn from their study should be exploited by health care professionals to impress upon cancer survivors the importance of practicing healthier activities to prevent cancer recurrence.

A new study reveals key factors that promote the spread of cancer to lymph nodes and provides a mechanism that explains how a common over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication can reduce the spread of tumor cells through the lymphatic system. The research, published by Cell Press in the February 14 issue of the journal Cancer Cell, opens new avenues for the design of antimetastatic therapies.

The lymphatic system consists of a network of vessels that carry lymphatic fluid from the body organs back to the general circulation. Along the way, lymphatic fluid percolates through lymph nodes. Unfortunately, cancer cells sometimes spread (via a process called metastasis) through the lymphatic system and can form secondary tumors in the lymph nodes. The spread of cancer cells to the lymph nodes is an important indicator of disease progression.

"Some tumors secrete protein growth factors that can act on the lymphatic vessels to facilitate metastasis. For example, elevated levels of the growth factor VEGF-D in human tumors correlate with lymph node metastasis and poor patient prognosis," explains the senior study author, Steven Stacker, associate professor from the Tumour Angiogenesis Program, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia. "However, thus far, mechanisms underlying the transit of cancer cells through the larger lymphatic vessels and into the lymph nodes remain elusive."

In the current study, Stacker and colleagues investigated how collecting lymphatic vessels, conduits that drain lymphatic fluid from tissues into lymph nodes, are altered during VEGF-D-driven metastasis. The researchers discovered that VEGF-D was linked to prostaglandin pathways, which are important regulators of lymphatic vessel dilation. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), which are known inhibitors of prostaglandin synthesis, reduced lymphatic vessel dilation and, therefore, inhibited tumor metastasis.

"This key interaction between lymphatic system growth factors and prostaglandins reveals a mechanism for physically preparing collecting vessels for tumor cell dissemination and a mechanism by which NSAIDs can reduce cancer metastases through the lymphatic system," concludes Dr. Stacker. "These insights may assist with the design of additional therapeutics for cancer patients and enhance current approaches that aim to prevent the spread of cancer cells through the lymphatic system and potentially to distant organs."

Ga. man claims he was insane in preschool shooting (AP)

DECATUR, Ga. ? The victim was a Harvard-educated businessman who was shot to death minutes after he dropped his son off at a suburban Atlanta day care center. The alleged killer was a successful engineer and father of three who lived in an affluent subdivision.

Hemy Neuman faces life in prison if he's convicted of the November 2010 shooting death of Russell Sneiderman. His trial begins Monday. Defense attorneys argue Neuman, who pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, was incapable of telling the difference between right and wrong when he pulled the trigger.

At the center of the trial is Sneiderman's wife, Andrea, who could be called to testify by both prosecutors and defense attorneys. Investigators linked the shooting in a court filing to an "extramarital affair between the defendant and Andrea Sneiderman."

The two knew each other through Neuman's work at General Electric, where he was Andrea's supervisor. Her attorney has declined to address allegations of an affair, and Andrea Sneiderman has said she considered Neuman a family friend.

Attorneys were set to sort through dozens of potential jurors on Monday for the trial, which is expected to last a few weeks. No matter the outcome, Neuman won't be a free man. If he's found not guilty by reason of insanity, Neuman will be turned over to Georgia's mental health system.

Sneiderman died Nov. 19, 2010, after dropping off his 2-year-old son at the day care center in Dunwoody, a suburb northeast of Atlanta. A bearded man in a hoodie approached Sneiderman, fired several shots and then hopped into a silver minivan and sped away.

It happened so quickly police initially believed it could have been a professional job, noting that no words were exchanged when Sneiderman was killed.

Sneiderman was a 36-year-old ambitious entrepreneur who graduated from Indiana University, married his college girlfriend and earned his MBA from Harvard. They settled in Dunwoody, where they planned to raise their two children.

"Our family has lost its brightest light, and we don't know why," his brother, Steve Sneiderman, said days after the killing. "Can you imagine that?"

Neuman, who was born in Mexico and went to school in Israel, wasn't interviewed by police until about six weeks after Sneiderman's death. He was charged after detectives discovered he rented a silver minivan shortly before the shooting that matched the description of a vehicle seen driving away from the scene.

Andrea Sneiderman, for her part, has been tightlipped about her relationship with Neuman. She released a brief statement to media a year ago that said she was shocked to learn of Neuman's arrest.

"I have been assured by the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office that Mr. Neuman is Rusty's killer and that they will do everything in their power to bring him to justice," she said in the statement. "My family and I are cooperating in any way we can to assist them in their efforts."

Andrea's attorney, Seth Kirschenbaum, didn't return calls seeking comment, but he has said his client is relieved Neuman admitted to the killing.

"This was a cold-blooded, premeditated murder," he said. "However, hopefully the prosecution is ready to rebut Mr. Neuman's insanity defense."

Neuman, a Georgia Tech graduate, lived in a pricey home in a Cobb County subdivision. He worked at General Electric, where he supervised Andrea. He is the father of three children. His estranged wife Ariela has hired an attorney who plans to be at the trial on her client's behalf.

Neuman's defense attorneys have said they will seek to get jurors to set aside their emotions and focus on the testimony by expert witnesses who have studied Neuman's actions. They say they have gathered ample evidence backing their claim that he is not guilty by reason of insanity.

"This case is not about whether or not he pulled the trigger. He is the one who did the shooting," defense attorney Doug Peters said in an interview. The question the jury must answer, he said, is "what was his mental capacity at the time?"
