New opportunity for rapid treatment of malaria

Researchers have identified a new means to eradicate malaria infections by rapidly killing the blood-borne Plasmodium parasites that cause the disease.
Malaria causes up to 3 million deaths each year, predominantly afflicting vulnerable people such as children under five and pregnant women, in tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Treatments are available for this disease, but the Plasmodium parasite is fast becoming resistant to the most common drugs, and health authorities say they desperately need new strategies to tackle the disease.
This new potential treatment uses molecules that interfere with an important stage of the parasite's growth cycle and harnesses this effect to kill them. The impact is so acute it kills ninety per cent of the parasites in just three hours and all those tested in laboratory samples of infected human blood cells, within twelve hours.
The research was carried out by chemists at Imperial College London and biological scientists from the research institutions Institut Pasteur and CNRS in France. Their work is published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
Lead researcher Dr Matthew Fuchter, from Imperial College London, said: "Plasmodium falciparum causes 90 per cent of malaria deaths, and its ability to resist current therapies is spreading dramatically. Whilst many new drugs are in development, a significant proportion are minor alterations, working in the same way as current ones and therefore may only be effective in the short term. We believe we may have identified the parasite's 'Achilles' Heel', using a molecule that disrupts many vital processes for its survival and development."
The research has identified two chemical compounds that affect Plasmodium falciparum's ability to carry out transcription, the key process that translates genetic code into proteins. These compounds are able to kill the parasite during the long period of its complex life cycle while it inhabits the blood-stream. This is in contrast to the majority of antimalarial drugs, whose action is limited to shorter stages of Plasmodium's life cycle.
"One particularly exciting aspect of this discovery is this new molecule's ability to rapidly kill off all traces of the parasite, acting at least as fast as the best currently available antimalarial drug," said Dr Fuchter.
Initial tests also showed the molecules were able to kill strains of Plasmodium that have developed a resistance to current treatments, although the scientists say more experiments are needed to confirm these results.
The scientists hope to refine these molecules, improving their effectiveness and proving this to be a viable strategy for treating malaria in humans. They hope it will lead to the development of an effective malaria cure within the next ten years.

10 Filthy-Rich, Tax-Dodging Hypocrites Pushing Disastrous ...
Brace yourself for one of the most aggressive corporate lobbying campaigns of all time. And one of the most hypocritical.
?Fix the Debt ? is a coalition of more than 80 CEOs who claim they know best how to deal with our nation?s fiscal challenges. The group boasts a $60 million budget just for the initial phase of a massive media and lobbying campaign.
The irony is that CEOs in the coalition?s leadership have been major contributors to the national debt they now claim to know how to fix. These are guys who?ve mastered every tax-dodging trick in the book. And now that they?ve boosted their corporate profits by draining the public treasury, how do they propose we put our fiscal house back in order? By squeezing programs for the poor and elderly, including Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
Fix the Debt claims their agenda is not just about spending cuts. But when it comes to their tax proposals, they use the slippery term ?pro-growth reform? to push for cuts in deductions that are likely to include credits for working families and ? you guessed it ? more corporate tax breaks. Chief among these is a proposal to switch to a territorial system under which corporate foreign earnings would be permanently exempted (instead of being taxed when they are returned to America).
This idea, also supported by the Bowles-Simpson deficit commission, would make it even more profitable for big corporations to use accounting tricks to disguise U.S. profits as income earned in tax havens. Citizens for Tax Justice estimates that such tax haven abuse will cost the Treasury more than $1 trillion over the next decade.
So who are the CEOs who are telling the rest of us to be responsible and tighten our belts after they?ve spent decades stiffing the U.S. Treasury? Of the 80 members of Fix the Debt?s CEO Fiscal Leadership Council, here are 10 that stand out as the biggest hypocrites:
1. Jeffrey Immelt, General Electric
Perhaps no tax-dodging U.S. corporation has done more to drain the U.S. Treasury than General Electric. Over the last 10 years GE reported more than $80 billion in U.S. pre-tax profits and yet paid a federal corporate income tax rate of just 2.3% .
One of GE?s favorite tricks is the ?Active Financing Exception.? U.S. corporations are supposed to pay U.S. taxes on interest income earned anywhere in the world. But GE enjoys this special exception for companies that have ?captive? foreign finance subsidiaries, such as their credit card arm. The measure was repealed as part of fair taxation reforms in 1986, but GE led a successful lobbying effort to bring it back in 1997. Although the exception was supposed to be temporary, Congress has renewed it six times. And, despite all the public hand-wringing over the deficit, lawmakers are seriously considering extending this and other corporate loopholes before the end of the year.
2. Jim McNerney, Boeing
Last year, Boeing was one of 25 major U.S. firms that paid their CEO more than they paid Uncle Sam in corporate income taxes, according to an Institute for Policy Studies report . The aerospace giant enjoyed a $605 million tax refund in 2011, despite reporting more than $5 billion in U.S. pre-tax profits. CEO Jim McNerney made $18.4 million in personal compensation. In fact, Boeing is a serial tax dodger , having paid federal corporate income taxes in only two of the last 10 years.
One of the ways Boeing avoids paying taxes is by taking advantage of the Research and Experimentation Tax Credit, which saved the $137 million last year alone. Government investment in basic research is not a bad idea, but current R&D credits are structured in a way that primarily benefits large, well-resourced high-tech firms like Boeing that would probably do the research anyway. CEO McNerney also chairs the Business Roundtable, which aggressively lobbies for more corporate tax breaks.
3. Lloyd Blankfein, Goldman Sachs
Few corporations have been as dependent on U.S. taxpayers for their very existence as Goldman Sachs. The 2008 bailout of American International Group and the steady stream of low- and non-interest loans for the financial sector have kept the company alive.
CEO Blankfein says he?d accept a small increase in individual taxes for the wealthy in exchange for a comprehensive budget deal. But his corporate tax proposals would wipe out the revenue gains from rolling back the Bush tax cuts for top earners. Blankfein is a big supporter of the territorial tax system explained above. This is hardly a surprise, since Goldman Sachs already operates 37 subsidiaries in tax havens .
Blankfein has also used his position at the helm of the Financial Services Forum, a club for the CEOs of 20 top banks, to oppose financial transaction taxes -- small levies on trades of stock, derivatives, and other financial instruments. Goldman Sachs has made as much as $300 million per year from the volatile high-frequency trading strategies that would be hardest hit by such a transaction tax. In early October, 11 European governments announced a plan to implement such taxes, with expected revenues in the neighborhood of $ 75 billion per year . But Goldman Sachs and other Wall Street firms have blocked U.S. progress on this major revenue-raiser.
4. Brian T. Moynihan, Bank of America
After a decade of risky?and reckless mortgage lending, Bank of America survived the 2008 financial crash with the help of a $45 billion bailout. Today, Bank of America sits on $128 billion in cash ? $18 billion of it is overseas ?and much of that is sitting in the company?s 115 tax haven subsidiaries .
Last year, after investors saw their stock price decline 58 percent and 30,000 Bank of America employees lost their jobs to layoffs, CEO Brian Moynihan saw his compensation quadruple to more than $8 million. His predecessor, Ken Lewis, raked in more than $50 million in the two years?before the housing bubble that Bank of America had help inflate burst in 2008.
5. David Cote, Honeywell Corporation
Over the last three years, Honeywell received more than $2.7 billion in federal defense contracts and reported more than $2.5 billion in U.S. pre-tax profits. And yet thanks to corporate deductions, tax subsidies, and loopholes, Honeywell has claimed $377 million in federal tax refunds during this period.
Honeywell CEO David Cote has been a fixture at Congressional hearings calling for a territorial tax system for corporations. He is also Vice-Chair of the Business Roundtable, a club for big business CEOs that has called for an extension of all the Bush tax cuts, including those for millionaires and billionaires, as well as the tax cuts on unearned income from capital gains and dividends. These combined measures would add $1.5 trillion to the debt over the next ten years.
6. Randall Stephenson, AT&T
AT&T is another firm that paid its CEO more last year than they paid in federal corporate income taxes. CEO Randall Stephenson made $18.7 million , while the firm enjoyed a $420 million refund from Uncle Sam.
AT&T is a major beneficiary of ?accelerated depreciation? rules that allow companies to turbo-charge tax deductions in the early years of the life of an asset. A 2009 accelerated depreciation rule saved the company $5.2 billion on their 2011 taxes, according to the firm?s 10-K report. Although touted as a way to jumpstart spending in a downturn, such tax breaks often result in taxpayers bearing a substantial portion of the cost of investments firms would?ve made anyway.
7. Arne Sorenson, Marriott International
In 2009, the U.S. Department of Justice prosecuted Marriott International for using an illegal tax shelter swindle dubbed ? Son of Boss .? The scam involved setting up a series of complex paper transactions between company subsidiaries to create $70 million in fake losses that could be offset against Marriott?s real profits. Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, a long-time friend of the Marriott family and named after Marriott?s patriarch J. Willard Marriott, was the head of the hotel giant?s audit committee in 1994 at the time the board first approved the Son of Boss transaction. According to Bloomberg, Marriott has also shifted profits to a Luxembourg shell company and avoided hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes through one federal tax credit for so-called synthetic fuel that Senator John McCain dubbed an ?expensive hoax.?
8. Alexander Cutler, Eaton Corporation
Less than two years after accepting $90 million in taxpayer-financed subsidies to locate a new world headquarters in the suburbs of Cleveland, Eaton Corporation announced that it would be moving its headquarters and reincorporating as an Irish company. The move is part of a merger deal with Cooper Industries, another Fix the Debt coalition member. The two companies boast that Eaton?s departure after 100 years in Cleveland will cut their tax bill by $160 million . Meanwhile, Eaton is fighting a $75 million bill from the IRS for back taxes and penalties related to alleged violations of transfer pricing agreements.
9. Lowell McAdam, Verizon
Verizon is one of 30 companies identified by Citizens for Tax Justice as having paid ?less than nothing? in federal income taxes over the entire 2008-10 period. Despite earning $32.5 billion in profits during these three years, the firm got so much in tax subsidies that they wound up with a net tax refund of $951 million. That works out to a tax rate of negative 2.9%. In effect, every Verizon phone customer paid more in federal telephone excise taxes than Verizon paid in federal income taxes.
10. Steve Ballmer, Microsoft
A recent Senate investigation exposed how Microsoft has used Olympic class accounting acrobatics to avoid paying taxes. Specifically, the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations charged that the software giant had devised a complicated transfer pricing agreement with a subsidiary in Puerto Rico to lower its tax bill on goods sold in the U.S. market by as much as $4.5 billion from 2009 to 2011. The investigation also accused Microsoft of avoiding billions in U.S. corporate income taxes by shifting royalty revenue to low-tax jurisdictions. Subcommittee Chair Carl Levin described Microsoft?s strategies as ?tax alchemy, featuring structures and transactions that require a suspension of disbelief to be accepted.? Such alchemy, while not illegal, is a major contributor to the?national debt.
Sanders to CEOs: Look in the Mirror
When Fix the Debt launched their 80 CEO-strong coalition on October 25, Senator Bernie Sanders responded by stating, ?Before telling us why we should cut Social Security, Medicare and other vitally important programs, these CEOs might want to take a hard look at their responsibility for causing the deficit and this terrible recession.?
Instead, the Fix the Debt coalition members are portraying themselves as the honorable ones who are brave enough to push the tough austerity medicine that is the only remedy for our fiscal ills. Nonsense. We are the richest nation in the history of the world. Our problem is that too much of our wealth is going into the coffers of rich individuals and corporations and to pay for misguided wars.
There are numerous budget plans by Senator Sanders, the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and others that would get us on the right track. At the Institute for Policy Studies , we?ve identified a dozen policies that would collectively raise trillions of dollars to in ways that would not only address the fiscal challenge but help make our economy more equitable, green, and secure. The report also points out that until we recover from the current unemployment crisis, we should not be contemplating any spending cuts that could deepen the crisis.
The Fix the Debt coalition is using the so-called ?fiscal cliff? as an opportunity to push the same old corporate agenda of more tax breaks while shifting the burden on to the middle class and the poor. If America?s CEOs really want to Fix the Debt, they should first commit to eliminating the loopholes that have allowed them to avoid paying their fair share of the cost of government, including investments necessary to keep our families and our communities strong and secure.

Shot Pakistani girl "will rise again": father
BIRMINGHAM, England (Reuters) - The father of a Pakistani girl who was shot in the head by the Taliban for advocating girls' education said on Friday his daughter was strong and would "rise again" to pursue her dreams after receiving treatment in a British hospital.
Malala Yousufzai, 15, was flown from Pakistan to the British city of Birmingham to receive specialist treatment after the October 9 attack which drew widespread international condemnation.
She has become a powerful symbol of resistance to the radical Islamist group's effort to deny women an education.
Her father, Ziauddin Yousufzai, and other family members flew to Britain on Thursday to help their daughter's recovery.
"They wanted to kill her. But she fell temporarily. She will rise again. She will stand again," he said, his voice wavering and breaking with emotion as he spoke.
"It's a miracle for us ... She was in a very bad condition," he told reporters, sitting alongside his son.
"She is improving with encouraging speed."
Yousufzai began standing up to the Pakistani Taliban when she was 11, when the Islamabad government had effectively ceded control of the Swat Valley where she lives to the militants.
She has been in critical condition since gunmen shot her in the head and neck as she left school in Swat, northwest of Islamabad.
British doctors say she has every chance of making a good recovery at the special hospital unit, expert in dealing with complex trauma cases. It has treated hundreds of soldiers wounded in Afghanistan.
Her father said he and his family cried when they were finally reunited with Malala on Thursday. "We are very happy," he said. "I pray for her."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The pre-Halloween hybrid weather monster that federal forecasters call "Frankenstorm" is looking more ominous by the hour for the East Coast, and utilities and local governments are getting ready.
Meteorologists expect a natural horror show of high wind, heavy rain, extreme tides and maybe snow to the west beginning early Sunday, peaking with the arrival of Hurricane Sandy on Tuesday and lingering past Halloween on Wednesday.
With a rare mix of three big merging weather systems over a densely populated region, experts predict at least $1 billion in damage.
The stage is set as Hurricane Sandy, having blown through Haiti and Cuba, continues to barrel north. A wintry storm is chugging across the country from the west. And frigid air is streaming south from Canada.
And if they meet Tuesday morning around New York or New Jersey, as forecasters predict, they could create a big, wet mess that settles over the nation's most heavily populated corridor and reaches as far west as Ohio.
Utilities are lining up out-of-state work crews and canceling employees' days off to deal with expected power outages. From county disaster chiefs to the federal government, emergency officials are warning the public to be prepared. And President Barack Obama was briefed aboard Air Force One.
"It's looking like a very serious storm that could be historic," said Jeff Masters, meteorology director of the forecasting service Weather Underground. "Mother Nature is not saying, 'Trick or treat.' It's just going to give tricks."
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecaster Jim Cisco, who coined the nickname Frankenstorm, said: "We don't have many modern precedents for what the models are suggesting."
Government forecasters said there is a 90 percent chance ? up from 60 percent two days earlier ? that the East will get pounded.
Coastal areas from Florida to Maine will feel some effects, but the storm is expected to vent the worst of its fury on New Jersey and the New York City area, which could see around 5 inches of rain and gale-force winds close to 40 mph. Eastern Ohio, southwestern Pennsylvania and western Virginia could get snow.
And the storm will take its time leaving. The weather may not start clearing in the mid-Atlantic until the day after Halloween and Nov. 2 in the upper Northeast, Cisco said.
"It's almost a weeklong, five-day, six-day event," he said from a NOAA forecast center in College Park, Md. "It's going to be a widespread, serious storm."
It is likely to hit during a full moon, when tides are near their highest, increasing the risk of coastal flooding. And because many trees still have their leaves, they are more likely to topple in the event of wind and snow, meaning there could be widespread power outages lasting to Election Day.
Eastern states that saw outages that lasted for days after last year's freak Halloween snowstorm and Hurricane Irene in late August 2011 are already pressuring power companies to be more ready this time.
Asked if he expected utilities to be more prepared, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick responded: "They'd better be."
Jersey Central Power & Light, which was criticized for its response to Irene, notified employees to be ready for extended shifts. In Pennsylvania, PPL Corp. spokesman Michael Wood said, "We're in a much better place this year."
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Thursday said the city was striking a tone of calm preparedness.
"What we are doing is we are taking the kind of precautions you should expect us to do, and I don't think anyone should panic," Bloomberg said. The city has opened an emergency situation room and activated its coastal storm plan.
Some have compared the tempest to the so-called Perfect Storm that struck off the coast of New England in 1991, but that one hit a less populated area. Nor is this one like last year's Halloween storm, which was merely an early snowfall.
"The Perfect Storm only did $200 million of damage and I'm thinking a billion" this time, Masters said. "Yeah, it will be worse."
As it made its way across the Caribbean, Sandy was blamed for more than 20 deaths. The 18th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season hit the Bahamas after cutting across Cuba, where it tore roofs off homes and damaged fragile coffee and tomato crops.
Norje Pupo, a 66-year-old retiree in Holguin, was helping his son clean up early Thursday after an enormous tree toppled in his garden.
"The hurricane really hit us hard," he said. "As you can see, we were very affected. The houses are not poorly made here, but some may have been damaged."

WikiLeaks releases hacked U.S. detainee rules
LONDON (Reuters) - The WikiLeaks website began publishing on Thursday what it said were more than 100 U.S. Defense Department files detailing military detention policies in camps in Iraq and at Guantanamo Bay in the years after the September 11 attacks on U.S. targets.
In a statement, WikiLeaks criticized regulations it said had led to abuse and impunity and urged human rights activists to use the documents to research what it called "policies of unaccountability".
The statement quoted WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange as saying: "The 'Detainee Policies' show the anatomy of the beast that is post-9/11 detention, the carving out of a dark space where law and rights do not apply, where persons can be detained without a trace at the convenience of the U.S. Department of Defense."
"It shows the excesses of the early days of war against an unknown 'enemy' and how these policies matured and evolved, ultimately deriving into the permanent state of exception that the United States now finds itself in, a decade later."
A spokeswoman for the U.S. Embassy in London said they had no immediate comment.
In January, U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay said the United States was still flouting international law at Guantanamo Bay by arbitrarily and indefinitely detaining individuals.
Almost 3,000 people were killed in 2001 when militants from Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda flew hijacked airliners into the World Trade Center towers in New York, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania.
Then President George W. Bush set up a detention camp at a U.S. naval base at Guantanamo in Cuba after U.S.-led forces invaded Afghanistan to expel al Qaeda following the September 11 raids. Of the 779 men held there, 167 remained as of mid-September 2012.
INTERROGATION
WikiLeaks said a number of documents it was releasing related to interrogation of detainees, and these showed direct physical violence was prohibited.
But it added the documents showed "a formal policy of terrorizing detainees during interrogations, combined with a policy of destroying interrogation recordings, has led to abuse and impunity".
A number of what can only be described as "policies of unaccountability" would also be released, it said.
One such document was a 2005 document "Policy on Assigning Detainee Internment Serial Numbers", it said.
"This document is concerned with discreetly 'disappearing' detainees into the custody of other U.S. government agencies while keeping their names out of U.S. military central records - by systematically holding off from assigning a prisoner record number," the WikiLeaks statement said.
WikiLeaks did not elaborate. But human rights activists say that after the September 11 attacks, the Central Intelligence Agency used "black sites" in friendly countries to interrogate and sometimes torture suspected militants beyond the reach of normal legal protections. The program's existence has never been officially acknowledged.
Assange, whose website previously angered the United States by releasing thousands of U.S. diplomatic cables, has been holed up inside Ecuador's embassy in central London since June to avoid extradition to Sweden to face rape and sexual assault allegations. He denies wrongdoing.

(Reuters) - Shares of Netflix Inc sunk as much as 16 percent on Wednesday as analysts cut price targets and warned emerging competition will threaten growth of the company's U.S. movie and TV streaming service.
Netflix on Tuesday cut its year-end forecast for new subscribers by 2 million. CEO Reed Hastings said the company had miscalculated how quickly it would grow in the young and fast-changing Internet TV market.
Shares of Netflix tumbled as much as 16 percent on Wednesday. In afternoon trading, Netflix was down 12 percent at $60.07 on Nasdaq.
"The lower numbers should lead investors to question the total addressable market, especially as this slowdown is in an ideal environment lacking material competition that will likely soon emerge," said Janney Capital Markets analyst Tony Wible.
"Every subsequent quarter has the potential to intensify the competitive risks," said Wible, who cut his price target to $48 from $53. He rates Netflix "neutral."
Other analysts reduced targets by around $5 to between $48 and $65. BMO Capital Markets slashed $22 off its target to bring it in line with the top of that range.
Wible pointed to a possible rival product from Apple Inc and the expected fourth-quarter launch of video services by Verizon Communications and Coinstar Inc's Redbox.
The Netflix stock, which traded at $304 in July 2011, has slumped after the company imposed an unpopular price hike, faced new competition and increased spending on new content and an international expansion.
In a note titled 'No catalyst/No cure,' Stifel Nicolaus analyst George Askew said Netflix's business model was broken as the streaming business lacks barriers to entry.
"Aggressive companies like Amazon, Verizon and Comcast have set their competitive sights on the online streaming business and have other revenue sources to subsidize it," Askew said.
"We believe fiscal year 2013 will be another eventful and probably frustrating year for Netflix."
CASH BURN
Netflix is using profits from its U.S. business to fund expansions into new markets. The company said it will take a loss in the fourth quarter as it sets up new service in the Nordic region.
At the same time, Netflix is spending more to create its own original programming. Free cash flow was a negative $20 million in the third quarter that ended September 30.
Netflix said it will continue to burn cash for several quarters but that it does not need to raise money.
"But its recent slip up in guidance, and willingness to spend, creates risk that this view changes," said Lazard Capital Markets analyst Barton Crockett.
Crockett expects the company's cash to fall to $450 million in 2013 from its current $800 million.
Even analysts who have a "buy" rating on Netflix lowered their price targets.
"While we continue to believe Netflix represents an incredibly compelling entertainment value, the pace of adoption of streaming video in general, and Netflix specifically, appears likely to be meaningfully slower than we previously anticipated," said Pacific Crest Securities analyst Andy Hargreaves, who cut his target to $85 from $130.

Revealing a mini-supermassive black hole
ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? One of the lowest mass supermassive black holes ever observed in the middle of a galaxy has been identified, thanks to NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and several other observatories. The host galaxy is of a type not expected to harbor supermassive black holes, suggesting that this black hole, while related to its supermassive cousins, may have a different origin.
The black hole is located in the middle of the spiral galaxy NGC 4178, shown in this image from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The inset shows an X-ray source at the position of the black hole, in the center of a Chandra image. An analysis of the Chandra data, along with infrared data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and radio data from the NSF's Very Large Array suggests that the black hole is near the extreme low-mass end of the supermassive black hole range.
These results were published in the July 1, 2012 issue of The Astrophysical Journal by Nathan Secrest, from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, and collaborators.
The properties of the X-ray source, including its brightness and spectrum -- the amount of X-rays at different wavelengths -- and its brightness at infrared wavelengths, suggest that a black hole in the center of NGC 4178 is rapidly pulling in material from its surroundings. The same data also suggest that light generated by this infalling material is heavily absorbed by gas and dust surrounding the black hole.
A known relationship between the mass of a black hole and the amount of X-rays and radio waves it generates was used to estimate the mass of the black hole. This method gives a black hole mass estimate of less than about 200,000 times that of the sun. This agrees with mass estimates from several other methods employed by the authors, and is lower than the typical values for supermassive black holes of millions to billions of times the mass of the sun.
NGC 4178 is a spiral galaxy located about 55 million light years from Earth. It does not contain a bright central concentration, or bulge, of stars in its center. Besides NGC 4178, four other galaxies without bulges are currently thought to contain supermassive black holes. Of these four black holes, two have masses that may be close to that of the black hole in NGC 4178. XMM-Newton observations of an X-ray source discovered by Chandra in the center of the galaxy NGC 4561 indicate that the mass of this black hole is greater than 20,000 times the mass of the sun, but the mass could be substantially higher if the black hole is pulling in material slowly, causing it to generate less X-ray emission. A paper describing these results was published in the October 1st, 2012 issue of The Astrophysical Journal by Araya Salvo and collaborators.
The mass of the black hole in the galaxy NGC 4395 is estimated to be about 360,000 times the mass of the sun, as published by Peterson and collaborators in the October 20, 2005 issue of the Astrophysical Journal.
Previously, astronomers have found that observations of a large number of galaxies are consistent with a close correlation between the mass of a supermassive black hole and the mass of the bulge of its host galaxy. Theoretical models developed to explain these results invoke mergers of galaxies, and predict that galaxies without bulges are unlikely to host supermassive black holes. The results found for NGC 4178 and the four other galaxies mentioned run counter to these predictions, and may suggest that more than one mechanism is at work in forming supermassive black holes.
Three other X-ray sources were found in the Chandra image. If they are located in NGC 4178 they are likely to be binary systems containing a black hole or neutron star. The brightest of the three sources may be an intermediate-mass black hole with a mass that is about 6,000 times that of the sun.
The co-authors of the paper describing these results are Shobita Satyapal, and Mario Gliozzi, from George Mason University; Teddy Cheung, from the National Academy of Science in Washington DC; Anil Seth, from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT, and Torsten Boeker from ESA/ESTEC in the Netherlands.

Changing epidemiology of clostridium difficile
ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? A stay in the hospital may not be the only way to acquire Clostridium difficile diarrhea -- but the potentially life-threatening infection may be associated with a number of health complications in hospitalized children, according to the findings from two studies unveiled October 22 at the American College of Gastroenterology's (ACG) 77th Annual Scientific meeting in Las Vegas. In a separate case report also presented October 22, fecal microbiota transplantation in a 20-month old with recurrent Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) suggests the therapeutic potential fecal bacteriotherapy in pediatric patients who fail standard therapy for CDI.
In one study, researchers from Sinai Hospital in Baltimore retrospectively analyzed the changing epidemiological trends of patients with Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) who were admitted to an acute care hospital between January 2005 and December 20120. The results of their analysis, "Changing Epidemiology of Clostridium difficile-Associated Diarrhea (CDAD) Among Long-Term Care Facility Patients," suggest a changing shift in the way CDAD is acquired -- from a traditional hospital-acquired infection to a community and long-term-care facility-based infection.
For the study, CDAD was defined as having clinical signs and symptoms of Clostridium difficile infection and a positive c. difficile stool toxin assay. The patients in the study were divided into three groups: nosocomial (hospital-acquired); long-term-care facility (LTCF); and community-acquired. Of the 258 toxin-positive CDAD patients in the analysis, 53 (20.6 percent) were nosocomial (hospital acquired); 119 were LTCF (46.1 percent) and 86 (33.3 percent) were in the community. The mean age for LTCF patients was higher than the other groups. Presenting symptoms were divided into diarrhea and non-diarrheal symptoms including fever, abdominal pain, and altered mental status. According to the results, the incidence of acute diarrhea was significantly lower in LTCF (18) patients as compared to patients from community (25).
Among the other findings:
* Most LTCF patients (80) presented with non-diarrheal symptoms whereas 47 community patients had non-diarrheal symptoms
* Use of proton pump inhibitors (PPI)s was more frequent in LTCF patients (73 percent) and nosocomial patients (69.8 percent) as compared to community patients (43 percent) -more-
* No clear indication was found for PPI use in 24.13 percent of LTCF patients using PPIs (21 out of 87), compared t 12.9 percent (4 out of 35) of nosocomial patients and 32.1 percent (9 out of 37) of community.
"There seems to be an epidemiological shift in C. difficile associated diarrhea from a traditional hospital -acquired infection to a community and long-term care facility-based infection," said co-investigator Vivek Kumar, M.D. He noted that diarrhea was not found to be the main presentation in LTCF patients. "This finding suggests that suspicion of C. difficile associated diarrhea should be high even if they present with non-specific symptoms such as abdominal pain, fever and altered mental status." He adds that more large scale epidemiological studies are needed to help us understand the spread of CDAD in the community.
Study Suggests CDI Associated with Increased Length of Hospital Stay, Other Health Implications for Children
While hospital and population-based studies have shown an increased incidence of C. difficile infection (CDI) in both adults and children, relatively little is known about the outcomes of infection in hospitalized children with CDI, according to researchers from the Mayo Clinic who analyzed the National Hospital Discharge Survey (NHDS) database to determine the epidemiology and outcomes of CDI in hospitalized children in another study. "The Epidemiology and Outcomes of Clostridium difficile Infection in Children from 2005-2009: Results from a Nationwide Survey," suggest that despite increased awareness of CDI in children and advancements in the management of CDI and infection and control practices, CDI remains a "major problem" in hospitalized children, and is associated with increased length of stay, colectomy, in-hospital mortality and discharge to a short-or-long-term care facility (DTCF).
There were an estimated 13.7 million children over the five-year study period, with a median age of 5 years and 47.8 percent female. Of this group, there were about 46,176 CDI cases (0.34 percent of all pediatric admissions) with a median age of 3 years; 48.1 percent female. The annual rate of CDI varied from 2.4 to 4.3 cases per thousand over the study period with no significant trend up or down, according to co-investigator Sahil Khanna, M.D.
Among the key findings children with C. difficile infection, compared to controls, had:
? Longer median length of stay (LOS): 6 versus 2 days
? Higher rates of colectomy (1.6 percent versus .32 percent)
? Higher all-cause in-hospital mortality (1.2 percent versus 0.48 percent) ? Higher discharge to long-term care facility (4.3 percent versus 2.7 percent)
"We did find that children with C. difficile infection were likely to stay in the hospital four days longer than children without the infection; twice as likely to lose part or all of their colon, and two and a half more times as likely to die in the hospital," said Dr. Khanna. "Despite increased awareness of C. difficile infection in children and advancements in management of C. difficile infection and infection prevention and control practices, this study suggests that CDI remains as major problem in hospitalized children. After adjusting for age, sex and cormorbidities, this study also suggests that C. difficile infection was an independent and the strongest predictor of increased length of stay, higher rates of colectomy, higher all-cause in-hospital mortality and higher discharge to a long-term care facility," Dr. Khanna explained.
"In hospitalized children C. difficile infection can be a major cause of morbidity and mortality. CDI should be considered as a differential in hospitalized children with diarrhea and managed aggressively," added Dr. Khanna.
Fecal microbiota therapy to treat recurrent C. difficile infection
"Recurrent C. difficile infection (CDI) has become a major problem in children often requiring recurrent and prolonged course of antibiotics," said co-investigator Dr. Sudhir Dutta. In a separate case-report also presented October 22, Dr. Dutta and a team of physicians from Sinai Hospital-Johns Hopkins Program in Internal Medicine and the Pediatric GI Department reported success after using fecal microbiota therapy to treat a case of recurrent C. difficile infection in a 20-month old male who was born premature at 27 weeks of gestation.
Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) involves taking the stool of a healthy person and putting it into the colon of a person with disease to help restore health. In persons with C. difficile infection, the goal is to restore the natural balance of good and bad bugs in the gut and eliminate the recurrent diarrhea, which can be life-threatening.
"While fecal microbiota therapy is successfully being used in adults with recurrent C. difficile infection, to our knowledge there is only one reported case in the pediatric literature where treatment with fecal microbiota transfer resulted in spontaneous improvement of symptoms and improvement of diarrhea," said Dr. Dutta.
In this case, the patient presented with a two-month history of diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and failure to thrive with a past medical history that included chronic lung disease and gastroesophageal reflux disease as well as treatment with multiple courses of antibiotics.
Co-investigator Dr. Rita Batra, of Sinai's Pediatric GI Department, noted that the decision to conduct FMT in the 20-month old patient was due to the severity of symptoms and because the procedure, "allows the fastest means of colonic composition of its normal microbiome components thus providing a primary line of defense against colonization and proliferation of opportunistic pathogenic bacteria including C. difficile."
After receiving donor stool from his mother via colonoscope in the right colon, the patient has now remained symptom-free with complete resolution of diarrhea, rectal bleeding and has consistently gained weight over the past three months, according to the case report.
"This case demonstrates the therapeutic potential of fecal bacteriotherapy in pediatric patients who fail standard therapy for C. difficile infection," said Dr. Dutta. "Randomized controlled studies with long-term follow up are needed to support the efficacy and safety of fecal microbiota therapy in pediatric patients."

C. difficile causes diarrhea linked to 14,000 American deaths each year. Deaths related to C. difficile increased 400 percent between 2000 and 2007, due in part to a stronger germ strain, according to the Centers for Disease Control. DOVER, N.H. (AP) ? An actor and martial arts instructor was charged in the death of a 19-year-old University of New Hampshire student who disappeared last week, and the girl's family pleaded for her to be brought home.
Law enforcement officials believe Elizabeth "Lizzi" Marriott, a marine biology major who volunteered at the New England Aquarium, is dead. The search for her body was continuing, Assistant Attorney General James Vara said Saturday.
Seth Mazzaglia, 29, of Dover, was charged with second-degree murder.
"This is the worst parents' nightmare, a missing child and with an unfavorable outcome," Marriott's family said in a statement Saturday. The family asked for prayers for rescue personnel who are looking for their daughter, saying they need to "bring her home."
At a vigil for Marriott in her hometown of Westborough, Mass., on Saturday night, her father, Robert, choked back tears while speaking to the hundreds who had gathered.
"Together we created an angel," he said, "and tonight she is home in heaven."
Vara said Mazzaglia knew Marriott, but declined to say how or what led to his arrest. He said police had credible information leading them to believe Marriott is dead, though he wouldn't elaborate. Mazzaglia was scheduled to be arraigned Monday.
A family friend, Dawn Downey of Westborough, Mass., described Marriott as an attractive young woman who was active in chorus in high school and was prom queen during her junior year. Marriott was helping to put herself through college by working at Target.
"She was just a good girl. That's probably what got her in trouble. She was too trusting and she was beautiful. Those two things will kill you," Downey said.
Marriott had attended a class Tuesday night and made plans to visit friends in Dover. Her cellphone was last used in Dover that night, according to fliers that family members posted around town. Her car was later found in a parking lot on campus in Durham.
"We were greatly saddened to learn of Lizzi's death and we extend our deepest sympathies to her family and friends," UNH President Mark W. Huddleston said in a statement. "Lizzi was a new member of the university community and will be missed in our classrooms. Our focus now will be on supporting our campus community during this difficult time."
The university was making counselors available to students. A moment of silence was observed in Marriott's honor at the school's hockey game Saturday night.
Marriott was a 2011 graduate of Westborough High School in Massachusetts. She lived with an aunt in Chester and commuted to the Durham campus. A message seeking comment was left with her parents.
Downey's daughter Nicole, who was Marriott's best friend, described Marriott as a "fun-loving and goofy" young woman who got along easily with others and had a wide circle of friends. She also was a good student who loved animals and science and volunteered at the New England Aquarium in Boston, Nicole Downey said.
"It was a shock to me when I found out she was missing. That was not like her at all," she said. "She was just all around a great person. I don't know why anyone would want to hurt her."
Mazzaglia, who graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 2006 with a bachelor's degree in theater, was active in the arts, performing in several dozen plays and musicals over the last decade in southern New Hampshire.
He also was a martial arts instructor who described himself on websites as having a black belt in karate and being familiar with several forms of martial arts and weapons. And he listed other interests including juggling.
Robert Modee, a friend of Mazzaglia's and a martial arts instructor in Kittery, Maine, said he was struggling to comprehend how Mazzaglia could be charged with murder.
"I don't understand what's going on right now," he told the Foster's Daily Democrat in Dover, N.H. "I'm completely floored with all this."
Mazzaglia was in custody Saturday and could not be reached. It was unclear whether he had a lawyer.
