Samsung Galaxy Beam UK arrival announced

Earlier this year Mobile World Congress played host to a lot of exciting new devices, surprises like the 808 PureView were head turners certainly, but another unique handset was found treading the show floor too. The Samsung Galaxy Beam, a specialist Android device complete with in built projector was on hand to show off its unusual skill set at Samsung?s booth.

It isn?t the first Samsung of its kind, but with the previous Beam (which ran Android 2.1 Eclair) only releasing in Singapore, this is the first of the company?s projector phones to really make an international splash. Carphone Warehouse are the first UK retailer to post up a fully fleshed out ?coming soon? page as pointed out by SoMobile, where prospective buyers can register their interest before the phone most likely arrives later this month.

The Galaxy Beam is in fact not all that dissimilar from the Samsung Galaxy S Advance, both come running Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread, both sport the same 1GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 chipset with 768Mb of RAM, both feature 5-megapixel rear-facing cameras capable of 720p HD video and 1.3-megapixel front-facing cameras and both use 4-inch WVGA displays.

The key difference is of course the Galaxy Beam?s 15-lumens-bright projector and by association its need for a larger, 2000mAh battery (the S Advance uses a 1500mAh cell). The Beam can project an image up to 50-inches at 720p HD resolution at 30 fps, bearing in mind this is a phone we?re referencing here, that?s not too shabby. What?s more the Beam supports multiple file types including MPEG4, H.263, H.264, WMV and DivX. It'll be interesting to see the uptake of this peculiar device as a feature such as this has just as much chance of scaring users as it does of inticing them.
