Douglas County schools to give pay hike, but union calls it a mirage
?The financial situation for the Douglas County School District appears to be leveling out after four years of budget cuts.
Douglas County plans no cuts for the 2013-14 school year and will give a 2 percent pay increase to all employees, the second year in a row teachers would receive pay hikes.
That was among the recommendations Superintendent Liz Fagenmade to the school board Tuesday night.
"We want to send a signal to our employees that they will have a raise next year," Fagen said before Tuesday's meeting. "They are going to have more money than this year."
But teacher union president Brenda Smith said teachers will actually be making less next year than they did this year, because the proposed salary does not include a one-time stipend and the base salary also is slightly lower.
"What she's proposing is just a mirage," Smith said. "It's misleading information."
Among Fagen's other recommendations:
? Eliminate the $25-per-student technology fee, which would save parents a total of $1.2 million;
? Absorbing a 0.9 percent increase in PERA benefits and increases in health insurance costs ranging from 6 to 8 percent.
There are about 65,000 students in Douglas County schools. This year, the district received a little more than $6,100 per pupil under the state school finance act. Worst-case scenario, the schools will receive an additional $200 per pupil, including a $125 increase from the state and a $75 one-time payout from the district.
The board will approve its budget later this year.
While the extra money for each student does not seem like a lot, it means plenty for schools that have seen either class sizes grow or teachers taking on more students than in previous years.
Legend High principal Corey Wise said the extra cash will work out to the equivalent of two full-time teachers across several departments at the Parker school.
"Any time we're a growing school, it's going to go to classes and increase in teachers," Wise said. "We get to hire more teachers."
But like with most things in Douglas County, the news can be seen from different vantage points.
Some believe the district has a carryover of its general fund of about $84 million, but that number has been disputed by the district. Regardless, that has led some to criticize the district for not putting the extra money back into the classroom.
"We are lacking basic funds to adequately serve our kids," Smith said. "What she is putting out is simply not enough to get our schools to where they need to be."
However, district officials say some of that money has already been spent or is earmarked for classrooms going forward. They project an end balance of $51.9 million at the end of this school year, and an unassigned fund balance of $15 million.
"We inherited an unhealthy budget situation," Fagen said, "and we've worked hard to stabilize it by spending the money we have, not the money we hope to have."

Why Every Local Business Needs A Blog
Local Businesses MUST Have A Blog To Compete in Today?s Market Place
I know?it?s the least thing on your daily priority list. If you?re like me ? or any local business for that matter ? your daily priorities are something like this:
- Provide service for your existing clients
- Call back existing clients with answers to questions
- Call back or return emails to new prospects
- Collect payments from existing clients
- Make payments to your vendors and suppliers
- Entering information into Quickbooks
- Getting information to your accountant
- Deciding what to spend marketing dollars on
That list only scratches the surface.
Add to that having a blog and most business owners get a glazed look in their eyes.
The problem is that what you get from the work involved is not always readily apparent.
But it is worth it! Here are the reasons why you need a blog:
1) ?A blog will keep existing customers coming back to your site.?If you have the same 10 pages on your website that you had in 2009, guess how often your customers will return? ?Never, is the answer. By updating your website with new blog posts, you?ll keep customers coming back and sell to them more often.
2) ?A blog will help you get more website visitors from Google.?Google loves new content on websites. When Google sees a steady stream of new content being posted to your blog, it will assign more authority to your site and reward your site with higher search engine rankings. Moreover, a blog will allow you to rank for more keywords, since each new page will have different key phrases associated with it.
3) ?A blog will allow you to use social media.?As new content is posted to your blog, those articles can be automatically posted to Twitter and Facebook and other social media outlets. This activity allows you to interact with your customers more often.
4) ?A blog will allow you to use rich media in your marketing.?With a blog, it is easy to display videos and image galleries ? without having to hire expensive designers and web developers.
5) ?A blog will help you develop your brand.?When you publish content to your blog, and then syndicate that content to social networks, you are gaining exposure that you can?t get anywhere else. Best of all ? it?s FREE. When your company is seen all over the web, it develops your brand. Even if you serve a small local market, being front-of-mind is key to long term success.
So? Get a blog! I recommend that your entire website be based on WordPress, but it doesn?t have to be. Even if you have a static website, ?bolting on? a WordPress blog is very easy to do.
You may have to get a web developer to get WordPress installed on your site, and yes, you?ll have to pay for it. But the benefits outweigh the cost by a LONG SHOT.
For perspective, my company charges about $1,000 to do a WordPress install on an existing site. Most web hosting providers have 3 click installs of WordPress, but you?ll need the blog to match the look and feel of your site, which is where the cost comes into play.
What are you waiting for? Time to start blogging!

Sony Handycam TD30V delivers premium feel, 3D shooting for less than a grand (hands-on)
Not quite ready to hop aboard the projector train? Sony's betting that 3D might be your game. The Handycam TD30V is the company's $999 answer to 2012's $1,499 TD20V, delivering a nearly identical feature set for a heck of a lot less cash. There's absolutely no reason to toss last year's model up on eBay in favor of adopting this slight modification -- instead of adding features, Sony trimmed a couple tools, if only to appease recent 20V adopters. There's a 20.4-megapixel Exmor R sensor, a 17/10x zoom lens (12x in 3D mode) with a 29.8mm wide-angle position in 2D or 33.4mm when capturing footage in three dimensions. The 1.229m-dot 3.5-inch 3D LCD remains, as does the 5.1-channel mic, microphone jack, Optical SteadyShot, AI shoe, GPS and HDMI port, though the company opted to drop the 64 gigs of internal memory (none is available here), along with the manual dial. In exchange, 2013's flavor picks up an all-black finish, that definitely delivers a premium feel over its predecessor.
During our brief hands-on with the TD30V, we were pleased with the look and feel of the camera -- we wouldn't have cried foul had Sony priced this closer to $1,500, but at $999, it's just that much more appealing. We didn't have an opportunity to review footage on a 3D set, but the camcorder's LCD does a fair job of displaying depth in 3D mode, enabling you to judge the end result without a realtime footage feed to an external display. The camera is lighter in hand than we expected, based on its size and appearance, and although the 30V was comfortable to use, you're not going to want to walk around with it dangling around your neck. If you were planning to pick up last year's entrant, it'd be worthwhile to wait -- the TD30V is expected to ship next month for just shy of a grand, and you can examine this very capable Handycam right now in the gallery just below.
