This Bike Made from Kevlar and Fiberglass Might Be the Fastest Bike Ever

This Bike Made from Kevlar and Fiberglass Might Be the Fastest Bike Ever

It doesn't even look like a bike but according to the wild mind of world-renowned cyclist Graeme Obree, it might be the fastest bike ever. Made from kevlar and fiberglass, the Beastie will be used at the World Human Powered Speed Challenge where Obree wants to break the world record of 82.8 mph. 83 miles per hour on that thing!

The Beastie is an incredible ride because, well, just look at the damn thing:

This Bike Made from Kevlar and Fiberglass Might Be the Fastest Bike Ever

Isn't that just a street luge suicide styles? The bike is so ridiculous that it topples over when its at standstill. Only when it's moving (and it needs the aid of two people running next to it) does it gain enough momentum to stay up straight. Whatever. Obree constructed the aerodynamic shell to be super streamlined. He described the bike to Humans Invent:

?The front section is rounded, then it widens out and widens out and then comes back in, in a very smooth curve and narrows down to the back end?the most important part in terms of dividing the air and then pulling the air back in again with the least amount of energy is to have a laminar (non-turbulent) flow over the sides of it.?

Obree has reached 50 mph on the Beastie under his own power in fair conditions. He's not positive he can break 83mph but thinks he has a chance if things break right. With that sort of bike, it seems like things always have to break right for you. [Humans Invent, Image Credit: Humans Invent]

Assad continues offensive on Homs in attempt to take control from rebels

For a second day Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces bombed the city of Homs, which is currently controlled by rebels. Representatives for the rebels say they are ready for a long battle.

President Bashar al-Assad's forces pounded Sunni Muslim rebels in the city of Homs with artillery and from the air on Sunday, the second day of an offensive to expand loyalist control over Syria's strategic centre, activists said.

They said rebels defending the old centre of Homs and five adjacent Sunni districts had largely repelled a ground attack on Saturday by Assad's forces but reported fresh clashes and deaths within the city on Sunday.

The offensive follows steady military gains by Assad's forces, backed by Lebanese Hezbollah militants, in villages in Homs province and towns close to the Lebanese border.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Assad must halt his "brutal assault" on Homs. Gulf countries, which back the rebels, urged Lebanon to stop "parties" interfering in the Syria conflict, a reference to Iranian-backed Hezbollah.

Opposition sources and diplomats said the loyalist advance had tightened the siege of Homs and secured a main road link to Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon and to army bases in Alawite-held territory near the Syrian coast, the main entry point for Russian arms that have given Assad a key advantage in firepower.

At least 100,000 people have been killed since the Syrian revolt against four decades of rule by Assad and his late father erupted in March 2011, making the uprising the bloodiest of the Arab Spring popular revolutions against entrenched autocrats.

The Syrian conflict is increasingly pitting Assad's Alawite minority, backed by Shi'ite Iran and its Hezbollah ally, against mainly Sunni rebel brigades supported by the Gulf states, Egypt, Turkey and others.

Sunni Jihadists, including al Qaeda fighters from Iraq, have also entered the fray.

ALARM

The loyalist advances have alarmed international supporters of the rebels, leading the United States to announce it will step up military support. Saudi Arabia has accelerated deliveries of sophisticated weaponry, Gulf sources say.

The Sham News Network opposition monitoring group said fighters belonging to the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front had killed five loyalist troops in fighting in the Bab Hud district of Old Homs on Sunday.

Activists said one woman and a child had been killed in an airstrike on the old city, home to hundreds of civilians.

Video footage taken by the activists, which could not be immediately verified, showed the two bodies being carried in blankets as well as a man holding a wounded child with a huge gash in his head.

Rebel fighters also fought loyalist forces backed by tanks in the old covered market, which links the old city with Khalidiya, a district inhabited by members of tribes who have been at the forefront of the armed insurgency.

"After failing to make any significant advances yesterday, the regime is trying to sever the link between Khalidiya and the old city," Abu Bilal, one of the activists, said from Homs.

"We are seeing a sectarian attack on Homs par excellence, The army has taken a back role. Most of the attacking forces are comprised of Alawite militia being directed by Hezbollah."

The Alawites are an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam that have controlled Syria since the 1960s, when members of the sect took over the army and the security apparatus which underpin the power structure in the mainly Sunni country.

URBAN WARFARE

Located at a major highway intersection 88 miles north of Damascus, Homs is a majority Sunni city. But a large number of Alawites have moved into mostly new and segregated districts in recent decades, drawn by army and security jobs.

Lebanese security forces said Hezbollah appeared to be present in the rural areas surrounding Homs but there was no indication that it was fighting in the labyrinth streets of Homs, where it could take heavy casualties.

Anwar Abu al-Waleed, an activist, said rebel brigades were prepared to fight a long battle, unlike in Qusair and Tel Kalakh, two towns in rural Homs near the border with Lebanon that fell to loyalist forces in recent weeks.

"We are talking about serious urban warfare in Homs. We are not talking about scattered buildings in an isolated town but a large urban area that provides a lot of cover," he said.

Britain's Hague expressed concern over the escalation of fighting in Homs, saying in a statement: "I call upon the Assad regime to cease its brutal assault on Homs and to allow full humanitarian access to the country."

The Syrian conflict has aggravated neighbouring Lebanon's own complex sectarian rivalry, triggering fighting between Alawite pro-Assad and Sunni anti-Assad militia in the northern city of Tripoli that has killed dozens.

Gulf foreign ministers meeting in Bahrain urged the Lebanese government to "commit to distancing itself from the Syrian crisis and to prevent any Lebanese parties from interfering in (Syria) in order to enable it to confront the brutal attacks and crimes conducted by the regime and its allies."

Chris Weidman?s bulletin board has a picture of Anderson Silva and a pledge to win at UFC 162

What do you put up on your bulletin board? A drycleaning receipt? Maybe a few pictures of note? Credentials from events I've covered and a card from my nephew hang on mine. For Chris Weidman, who will challenge the UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva for the belt on Saturday, his bulletin board includes a picture of Silva and a note reminding him of his goal.

In case you can't read Weidman's chicken scratch, the note says:

I, Chris Weidman, will defeat Anderson Silva on July 6th, 2013, and become the UFC MW champion of the world!

* Work hard every day
* Eat healthy
* No excuses
* Refuse to lose
* Physical, mental, spiritual

Using the bulletin board to motivate isn't new, but this sort of single-minded focus on the goal is interesting to see heading into the fight. It's been a year since Weidman won his last fight and had his mind on Silva. Will the focus make a difference? Vote in the poll and say why you think your pick will win.

Thanks to Ariel Helwani and TD for tweeting this pic.

Contestants play Plinko as show host Drew Carey and model Manuela Arbelaez watch from the floor.

Plink! Plink! Plink! Plinko! The popular "Price Is Right" game is celebrating its 30th anniversary this fall, and to mark the occasion, the game show is devoting an entire episode to it in September.

"When we realized it was the 30th anniversary of Plinko, we wanted to do something special," Mike Richards, the executive producer of "The Price Is Right," told BuzzFeed. "And (host) Drew (Carey) and I have always wanted to do an all-Plinko show. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to keep trotting it out."

The game, which debuted in 1983, offers contestants a chance to win up to $50,000. Players are given one free chip, then must try to win four more by correctly guessing the first or last digit of an item's price. The contestants then take their chips to the top of the giant board, and one by one, aim and release them with the hope they'll land on the $10,000 slot at the center. The other slots are $0, $100, $500 and $1,000.

The all-Plinko episode will air Sept. 27, during the premiere week for the show's 42nd season.

"The Price Is Right" airs weekdays on CBS.

Startups Compete To Win The Mobile App CRM Battle

Mobile CRMEditor's note:?Ankur Jain is a venture investor at Nexus Venture Partners. Nexus invests in early and early growth stage companies across sectors in India and the U.S. The rapid growth of mobile device usage has created major gaps in CRM capability; as smartphone adoption has exploded, companies have scrambled to launch mobile apps, many of which are disconnected from an organization's broader CRM capabilities.

Google, Microsoft slate spying bill

Internet, technology giants oppose proposed obligations in eavesdropping legislation.

Internet and software giants Google and Microsoft have slammed legislation that could see the Government try to force them to make their systems available for interception by the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB).

Only network operators such as Telecom, Vodafone and 2degrees are obliged to make their networks available for eavesdropping by the GCSB, SIS and police.

The new Telecommunications (Interception Capability and Security) bill being considered by Parliament's law and order committee would allow the Government to place the same obligations on internet service companies such as Google, Facebook and Microsoft-owned Skype.

Google submitted that the bill would harm innovation to the detriment of New Zealand customers and would raise privacy issues.

While Google recognised interception tools were necessary, it was concerned the new obligations were broader than necessary.

The additional costs, time and challenges imposed "may discourage both local and international entities from making new service offerings in New Zealand. It could also lead to existing providers exiting the New Zealand market or reducing their offerings", Google submitted.

Google also warned that the bill would require global internet companies based outside New Zealand to undertake interception, "even if doing so would conflict with those companies' legal obligations in their home jurisdiction".

It said ministers should only be able to impose interception obligations on internet service companies "following the transparency of a parliamentary process" rather than a simple ministerial direction which the bill allows for. That ministerial direction and other processes under the bill lacked transparency and "would likely raise public fears of unjustified intrusion into their privacy", Google said.

Microsoft also said the bill could result in obligations being placed on overseas-based internet companies that may "conflict with pre-existing obligations that they have under overseas laws".

The committee's consideration of submissions continues this week while the security and intelligence committee is to hear submissions on the GCSB bill from tomorrow.

Attack on security convoy kills 11 in Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? Police say a bomb attack on a security convoy in northwest Pakistan has killed at least 11 people.

Police officer Mohammad Zahid says the blast Sunday in the main northwest city of Peshawar also wounded 19 people. Several vehicles and nearby shops were damaged in the attack.

No one has claimed responsibility. But suspicion will likely fall on the Pakistani Taliban. The group has been waging a bloody insurgency against the government for years that has killed thousands of security personnel and civilians.

Peshawar is located on the edge of Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal region, the main Taliban sanctuary in the country, and has been hit by scores of bombings over the years.
