NYC Dads and Stay At Home Dads Group: NYT: Dads are Taking ...

Excellent article in The New York Times about the changing face of dads, Dads are Taking Over as Full-Time Parents?(Just Wait Until Your Mother Gets Home)?by Alex Williams?. The article features many members of the NYC Dads Group as well as some of our favorite fathers around the country, including Mike Adamick in San Francisco and Dave Worford in Colorado. Last week, he [Brooklyn Dad, Chris Michel] ?recalled: ?We were walking through the park, and I had a nice alliterative line drop into my head, so I pulled out my phone, opened up the tiny little word editor, trying to frantically type this good line. And of course, as soon as I opened my phone, she wants to show me this bug that she has found.??
?This ain?t the 20th century,? he added. ?There are 300 million people in the U.S., so there are 150 million ways to be a man.?

Definitely worth a read and a big step forward for the media's representation of stay-at-home dads.

Geckos are remarkable little creatures, clinging to almost any dry surface, and Alyssa Stark, from the University of Akron, USA, explains that they appear to be equally happy scampering through tropical rainforest canopies as they are in urban settings. 'A lot of work is done on geckos that looks at the very small adhesive structures on their toes to really understand how the system works at the most basic level', says Stark. She adds that the animals grip surfaces with microscopic hairs on the soles of their feet that make close enough contact to be attracted to the surface by the minute van der Waals forces between atoms. However, she and her colleagues Timothy Sullivan and Peter Niewiarowski were curious about how the lizards cope on surfaces in their natural habitat.

Explaining that previous studies had focused on the reptiles clinging to artificial dry surfaces, Stark says 'We know they are in tropical environments that probably have a lot of rain and it's not like the geckos fall out of the trees when it's wet'. Yet, the animals do seem to have trouble getting a grip on smooth wet surfaces, sliding down wet vertical glass after a several steps even though minute patches of the animal's adhesive structures do not slip under humid conditions on moist glass. The team decided to find out how Tokay geckos with wet feet cope on wet and dry surfaces, and publish their discovery that geckos struggle to remain attached as their feet get wetter in The Journal of Experimental Biology at http://jeb.biologists.org.

But first they had to find out how well their geckos clung onto glass with dry feet. Fitting a tiny harness around the lizard's pelvis and gently lowering the animal onto a plate of smooth glass, Stark and Sullivan allowed the animal to become well attached before connecting the harness to a tiny motor and gently pull the lizard until it came unstuck. The geckos hung on tenaciously, and only came unstuck at forces of around 20N, which is about 20 times their own body weight. 'The gecko attachment system is over-designed', says Stark.

Next, the trio sprayed the glass plate with a mist of water and retested the lizards, but this time the animals had problems holding tight: the attachment force varied each time they took a step. The droplets were interfering with the lizards' attachment mechanism, but it wasn't clear how. And when the team immersed the geckos in a bath of room temperature water with a smooth glass bottom, the animals were completely unable to anchor themselves to the smooth surface. 'The toes are superhydrophobic [water repellent]', explains Stark, who could see a silvery bubble of air around their toes, but they were unable to displace the water around their feet to make the tight van der Waals contacts that usually keep the geckos in place.

Then, the team tested the lizard's adhesive forces on the dry surface when their feet had been soaking for 90min and found that the lizards could barely hold on, detaching when they were pulled with a force roughly equalling their own weight. 'That might be the sliding behaviour that we see when the geckos climb vertically up misted glass', says Stark. So, geckos climbing on wet surfaces with damp feet are constantly on the verge of slipping and Stark adds that when the soggy lizards were faced with the misted and immersed horizontal surfaces, they slipped as soon as the rig started pulling.

Therefore geckos can walk on wet surfaces, so long as their feet are reasonably dry. However, as soon as their feet get wet, they are barely able to hang on and the team is keen to understand how long it takes geckos to recover from a drenching.

Wisconsin teen wins national texting championship - again

A 17-year-old boy from Wisconsin on Wednesday won an annual national texting competition for the second time, taking home $50,000 as he pledged to be back next year.

"I killed it," Austin Wierschke said, holding a check for his prize money in New York's Times Square where the contest, sponsored by LG Mobile, took place.

Wierschke, the contest's 2011 champion, beat out 10 others, aged 16 to 24, who had been winnowed down from over 100,000 competitors during preliminary rounds conducted since May.

The contenders texted a line from "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" while wearing black out goggles, transcribed a phrase written backward, and completed other challenges meant to test their texting accuracy, speed and dexterity.

Wierschke, a high school student from the small town of Rhinelander in northeastern Wisconsin, won by texting a 149-character message with capitalization, punctuation and various symbols, in 39 seconds.

He is the only two-time winner of the 5-year-old texting competition, the nation's largest.

"I'll see you next year... bring it on," said Wierschke.

Wierschke said he practiced by texting friends, typing up random phrases and words, and having his mom read off phrases that he would text with his eyes closed.

Kent Augustine, 16, from New York, lost to Wierschke by a few seconds in the last round.

This year's group of competitors, flown from Montana, Texas and California among other states, is a sign of the continued popularity of texting, the contenders all agreed.

"I like texting because you think more about what you say," Wierschke said.

Are all seniors really living the good life? At LIFE ElderCare we see ...

Based on a poll of 2,250 older adults, USA Today recently proclaimed, ?Life?s just good for most older Americans.? The article said that most seniors are content with their finances, their health and where they live, and are the most optimistic about the years to come.

Does this really represent an accurate picture of older Americans? Well, to start off, let?s get some perspective. According to the 2010 census, there are currently 40.3 million people in the US who are 65 or older. And the fastest growing segment of this group are those 85-94 years old. Their numbers have increased 29.9% from 2000 to 2010.

People who are 85 and older are increasingly suffering from chronic, limiting illnesses or conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis and senile dementia. These conditions make them increasingly dependent on others for help in performing activities of dally living.

National data indicates that over 80% of older adults with limitations in three or more ADL?s are still able to live in the community, but not without help. Fifty to sixty percent rely on informal family caregivers.

At LIFE ElderCare the majority of people we serve are over 85, but during the past year the number of younger seniors has increased. One example is Mary, 71 and her husband Michael, 73. After Mary suffered a few minor strokes and Michael lost his vision to macular degeneration, they found themselves without transportation and were unable to buy groceries, get to doctor appointments or maintain the upkeep on their Fremont home without family and outside assistance.

They both feel a deep sense of sadness about the prospect of having to sell their home to move into assisted living. ?We always imagined a retirement of traveling and good times,? says Michael, ?but you never know when illness is going to strike. This is not how we envisioned retirement.?

A group of young adults ban together to create a street drug that will demolish competition substances and place them at the top of the game using a substance they managed to snatch from a "loyal investor" that was based in a a military site not far from town .....only they destroy more than just the competition. After witnessing a person become enraged, dangerous, and nearly impossible to kill after a single injection of their "super drug", the group becomes fearful and deposes of the drug in a less than smart manner.....by burning the rest in a bon fire at the edge of town. They thought they had dodged the bullet...but they were wrong. Soon plant life demolished, and rivers turned black.....it wasn't long before locals began to act strange.

As murder rates skyrocketed, strange reports poured in about people turning on family, friends, and even complete strangers who happened to be near by. But it wasn't the killing that worried those lucky enough to remain sane....it was the appearance of the murderers and their bewildering actions. Whites of their eyes bleed red, and stood out against ghostly pale skin....almost appearing blue. Their nails blackened, as well as their teeth, and they screeched as if unable to speak. They fed on anything...living or not...and soon those who remained sane withered down to scarcely anyone. When the military finally stepped in, it brought hope....only they weren't looking to save anyone. They saw the town as a lost cause, and destroyed it. They said they had saved millions by sacrificing a few.....but they doomed everyone. Air born, the sickness spread. With every rain storm or windy day came a new town over run with rage. Nobody could figure out a cause....no one but the people who started it all.

The sickness took on the name Macabre Rage, and soon it wiped out nations. The only things that seemed immune where a few types of plants, and a couple of animal species with slightly raised body temperatures. The group sets out to fix what they destroyed....no matter the cost. The only hope was to discover what exactly they had put into their little "science project", and what it's purpose was.

If having the living dead after you isn't terrible enough, what are you suppose to do when your enemy becomes the individuals who are meant to serve and protect you? As the group draws closer to the answer of a cure....knew questions arise; What is the military hiding...and why would they create something capable of causing such havoc? Soon their little science project doesn't seem like it was such a secret. Could it be they wanted this to happen, and if so, for what purpose?

Chronic exposure to staph bacteria may be risk factor for lupus

ScienceDaily (Aug. 8, 2012) ? Chronic exposure to even small amounts of staph bacteria could be a risk factor for the chronic inflammatory disease lupus, Mayo Clinic research shows. Staph, short for Staphylococcus aureus, is a germ commonly found on the skin or in the nose, sometimes causing infections. In the Mayo study, mice were exposed to low doses of a protein found in staph and developed a lupus-like disease, with kidney disease and autoantibodies like those found in the blood of lupus patients.

The findings are published online this month in The Journal of Immunology. The next step is to study lupus patients to see if the staph protein in question plays a similar role in humans, says co-author Vaidehi Chowdhary, M.D., a Mayo Clinic rheumatologist.

"We think this protein could be an important clue to what may cause or exacerbate lupus in certain genetically predisposed patients," Dr. Chowdhary says. "Our hope is to confirm these findings in lupus patients and hopefully prevent flares."

Another key question is whether treating at-risk people to eradicate staph can prevent lupus from forming in the first place. Lupus occurs when the immune system attacks tissues and joints. It may affect virtually any part of the body and can be tough to diagnose because it often mimics other ailments. There is no cure, only treatment to control symptoms. Lupus is more commonly diagnosed in women, African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians and people 15 to 40.

The cause is often unknown; it appears people genetically predisposed to lupus may develop it when something in the environment triggers it, such as infections, certain drugs or even sunlight.

Physicians do not really know what causes lupus, so the discovery of the staph protein's possible role is exciting, Dr. Chowdhary says.

In the mice studied, a staph protein known as a staphylococcal enterotoxin B, or SEB, activated autoreactive T and B lymphocytes, a type of white blood cells, leading to an inflammatory illness mirroring lupus. Research on people has shown that carrying staph bacteria is linked to autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis, Kawasaki disease and graulomatosis with polyangiitis.

The lupus study was funded by the National Institutes of Health, an American College of Rheumatology Research and Education Foundation Career Development Bridge Funding Award, a Ronald F. Kinney Executive Dean for Research Career Development Award from Mayo Foundation and a Mayo Clinic Research Early Career Development Award.

The research team included Ashenafi Tilahun; Chad Clark; Joseph Grande, M.D., Ph.D.; and Govindarajan Rajagopalan, Ph.D., all of Mayo Clinic.
